UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
HENRY O. BALDWIN, OF NORTH WOLGOTT, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRA FT-EQUALIZERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l74,75, dated March 14, 1876 application filed February 16, 1876 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY (J. BALDWIN. of North Wolcott, in the county of Lamoille and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draftl lvoners; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referonce marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My im'ention relates to draft-equalizers; and it consists in constructing the doubletree so as to have a lateral movement across the pole or tongue, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which the figure is a plan view of my invention.
A represents the pole or tongue of a wagon or other vehicle. B is the double-tree, placed thereon and under the hammer-strap 0. On the front side of the double-tree is secured an tlongated metallic loop, D, through which the draft-bolt a passes, said bolt going, as usual, through the hammer-strap and tongue. E E are the single-trees, attached to the ends of the double-tree B, in any of the known and It will readily be seen that when one horse only starts the double-tree moves laterally toward the opposite side as far as the loop D will permit, and the other end of the doubletree is'at the same time thrown back by means of the chains 1) b, at once equalizing the draft.
Another advantage arising from this construction is, that the strength of the doubletree is in nowise impaired, there being no hole made for a bolt. I
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the tongue A and hammer-strap O, of the double-tree B, having the elongated metallic loop D, connected directly to its front, the draft-bolt a, passing through the loop, and the chains b, connecting the double-tree. to the tongue, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set'my hand and seal this 5th day of February, 1876. v
, HENRY O. BALDWIN.
