The invention relates in general to containers and holders, and, more particularly, to a holder for carrying and dispensing stick material, such as for instancea lipstick.

The invention further relates to a novel rier member which may seat a lipstick. A,

cover member is provided which may have operative connection with the carrier member, whereby the lipstick may be advanced for use by merely moving the cover member to open position.

An advantage ofthis construction is that the lipstick holder may be made of any desired cross section. In other words, the feeding mechnism does not depend upon the cross section. The cover member operates to completely close the lipstick holder so that when the holder is in closed position it is impossible for dirt or other material to get inside the holder to contaminate the lipstick and equally impossible for the material of the lipstick to leak out and soil the pocket or hand bag of the user.

A further feature of the invention is the provision of a cover member having a special finger gripping portion. This finger griparranged that it is impossible to grasp the cover in such a manner that the fingers will accidentally touch the lipstick when the cover is moved to open or closed position.

This feature obviates all possibility of soiling the fingers by accidentally touching the lipstick and of breaking the l pstick by accidentally touching it in opening or closing the holder.

Other features of the invention are the provision of a lipstick holder which is simple and rugged, which cannot easily be broken or get out of order and which is simple to operate and has a neat and pleasing appearance.

The invention also consists in certain new and original features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.

Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will be pointed out with particularity in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects and advantages, the mode of its operation and the manner of its organization may be better understood by re .ferring to the following description taken connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross section of a. lipstick holder taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, with the parts in closed position;

In the following description and in the claims parts will be identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit.

Like reference characters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.

Referring first to Figs; 1 to 5 inclusive, the lipstick holder may comprise a holder tube 1 which may be elliptical in cross seetion and which has its lower end closed and rounded as shown and. its upper end open. The holder tube 1 is provided with a pair. of longitudinally extending slots 2 in its side wall at the ends of its longer transverse axis.

Mounted within the holder tube 1 may be a carrier tube 3 of similar cross section and snugly fitting and telescoping in the holder tube 1. The carrier tube 3 may have openings 4 in its sidewall for a purpose herein- .ma be of generally elliptical cross section an may be'constructed to telescope down over the holder tube 1. Projecting downwardly from the cap may be a skirt or wall portion 15 extending more than half way around the holder tube. At the lower end of the skirt portion are disposed a pair of I arms 10, these arms being connected to the carri-r tube by means of a pin 11 passing through the slots 2 and the holes 4. bkirt 15 and arms 10 are curved laterally to snugly fit the curved wall of the holder tube 1 as shown in Fig. 3 and the parts are so arranged that the sides of the holder tube 1 form ways or guides for the skirt 15 and projecting arms 10 to allow the cover member 8 to be moved relatively to the holder tube 1 longitudinally in a true straight path. Due to this construction the cover 8 normally tends to remain engaged with the sides of the holder tube while 1t 13 in central position or in line with the holder tube, and when it is desired to swing the cover member 8 laterally to the position shown in Fig. 4 suflicient force must be used to sprin the sides of the skirt 15 and arms 10 out o engagement with the guides or ways on the holder tube 1. 7

When it is desired to open the holder, the cover member 8 may be moved away from the holder tube 1 the sides of the holder tubeguiding the skirt 15 until the lipstick 6 is moved to the desired position. The cover member 8 may be then swung laterally about pivot pin 11 to the position shown in Fig. 4 in which position the lipstick is ready for use. To swing the cover member 8 laterally from its central position to the position shown in Fig. 4 the arts must be sprung slightly. When it is esired to close the holder, the cover member 8 is swung from the position shown in Fig; 4 to its central position, the parts then ing telescoped together. In' closing the holder when the cover member 8 is placed in the position shown in Fig. 2, the sides of the skirt 15 and side arms 10 spring back to nor mal position to snugly engage the side walls of the holder tube 1. It will be noted that the cover member may be swung only one way in opening, and in closing there is no danger of the cover member being swung beyond its central position, the .skirt 15 operating to limit the swinging movement of the cover member.

Referring now to Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the holder tube 20 may be provided with longitudinally extending slots 21 in its side wall and a pair of notches 22 in itsupper open end' in line with the slot 21. The carrier tube 23 snugly fits the holder tube 20 and telescopes there n, the carrier tube being provided with a bottom plate 24 and pivot holes 25.

The cover memberr26 may comprise a cap 27 having a pair of oppositely disposed side arms 28 snugly fitting the holder tube and conforming to the curvature thereof, these side arms having at their lower ends a pivot pin 29 extending therefrom, said pivot pin also extending through the slots 21 in the holder tube and holes 25 in the carrier tube.

The side arms at their upper end are provided with a pair of projections 30 on which the fingers may be placed in opening the holder. The cap 27 may furthermore be provided with a pair of downwardly and inwardly integral tongues 31 to aid in seating the cap on the holder tube when the holder is closed.

When it isdesired to open the holder the fingers are placed on the projections and the cover member 26 moved longitudinally until the lipstick or other material has been exposed the desired distance, and then the cover 26 is swung-to either one side or the other to allow free access to the li stick or other material. The side arms 28 being curved to snugly fit the holdertube, the walls of the holder tube actas a guide or way for the side arms 28 so that the cover member 26 may truly telescope within the holder tube 20. The parts must be sprung slightly to swing the cover member from central position and when the cover member is swung back to central position, the parts spring back to unsprung position. The engagement of the curved side arms 28 with the holder tube operates to arrest the lateral swing of the cover member in closing and prevents the cover member from being swung too far.

Referring now to Fig. 9,--the holder tube 33 in this figure is elliptical in cross section and is provided with slots opposite the smaller transverse axis instead of the larger transverse axis as in Figs. 1 and 6. The cap 34 is elliptical and telescopes down upon the outside of the holder tube in closed position. The side arms 35 may be formed integral with the cap, and extend from the cap to the pivot pin36 which engages the carrier memer thru the slots in the holder tube. After the cap 34 is disengaged from the holder tube 33, the cap may be swung to either side to allow access tothe contained material. The arms may be curved to. snugly fit the holder tube as in Figs. 6, 7 and 8.

As will be appreciated, in all of the above modifications when the lipstick holder is in closed position the lipstick is absolutely hidden and there is no way in which dirt may enter the lipstick holder and the material of the lipstick escape to soil the pocket or 'bag of the user. Furthermore, the operation of the lipstick 'is not dependent upon cross sectional shape and the lipstick may be fed to usable position by simple longitudinal movement of the cover member and then laterally swinging itto one side. The feeding mechanism is simple and rugged, easy to operate, has few parts, is not likely to get out of order and can be made inexpensively.

While the holder has been described as a lipstick holder it is obvious that the holder may be used to carry and dispense any other substance, such as a shaving brush, comb, or stick material of any kind.

While certain novel features of the invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. A holder for stick material comprising a holder tube having an open end, a carrier member telescoping within said holder tube, a covermember having a cap and a pair of side arms connected to said cap, means operatively connecting said side arms and'carrier member, said side arms having finger gripping portions so that the fingers by which said portions are grasped cannot touch the stick material when operating said holder.

2. A holder for stick material comprising a holder tube having an open end and oppositely disposed notches in its wall at said open end, a carrier membertelescopingl within said holder tube, a cover member aving a substantially flat cap and fitting inside said gers will not touch the stick material when operating said holder.

3. A holder for stick material comprising a holder tube having a closed end, an open end and oppositely disposed notches in its wall at said open end, said tube having a slot in each side, a carrier member telescoping within said holder tube, a cover member having a substantially flat cap and fitting inside said holder tube in closed position substantially flush with the end thereof, side arms integrally connected to said cap and adapted to be positioned in said notches, said arms adapted to overlie said slots and having pivotal connections with said carrier member, and finger gripping projections on said arms near said cap.

4. A container comprising a holder tube having an open end, a carrier member within said holder tube, a cap seating inside said holder tube when in closed position, and an arm disposed outside said' tube connecting said cap and member.

5. A container comprising a holder tube having a slot in each side, a carrier member telescoping within said holder tube, a cap fitting" inside the top of said tube and side arms connected to said cap and said carrier member and adapted to overlie said slots.
