My invention relates to ,well d'rilling ma}.
chines and more particularly to a combination .spudding mechanism and walking beam; and the. object is to. provide in one a machine a spudder and a walking beam,
either one of which be used for drilling purposes, thusmaking a machine which has a dual capacity. The object is .to improve such machines as are illustrated in Patent N o. 1440,5589, dated Jan. 2, 1923,.b-y providing walking beam attachments on the same frame.
Otherobjects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed .out in the a claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the machine equipped with the walking beam and attachments, a part of the spudder mechanism being omitted. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the machine showing both the spudder attachments and the walking beam attachments, the walking beam and attachments being shown in inoperative form 30 when the machine is using the spudder attachments. Fig. 5 is a detail view, showing the adjustability of the pitman bars of the walking beam attachment.
Fig. 6 is a broken front end view, showing the manner of pivotally connecting the derrick to the frame.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
"' The machine is provided with the usual base frame members 1 and 2 with uprights 3 and 4 and cross brace 29 and pivot bar 6 which serves as a cross-bar. The spudding frame members 7 are pivotally mounted on ding frame members 7, .crossbeam 8 and knuckle joint 9. An upright 10 is attached the bar 6. There is no change in the spudments. The fulcrumfiis mounted the upright 10 and two pairs of ,U-bolts are mountedon the fulcrum bar1,4 and pro jected down past the bars 13 and through plates 16 and secured in the plates 1-6 by nuts 17 At the operating end, the walking beam is provided with a. guide shoe 18 *for engaging the temper screw suspension] chain.
The bars l3 areattached rigidly to the guide shoe 18 and the chain is wrapped on the end of th w lk ng eam an e ended d wn the groove in the shoe. and attached to the temper screw. The walking beam members 13 are operated by pitman bars .20 which are pivotally connected to cranks 21 which are rigid with shaft 22. The pitmanrods or bars are pivotally connected to the pivotshaft23 and bearings 24-, are provided for the shaft 23. Plates 2,5 are attached to the pitman bars 20 and pivotally connected to the bearings 24 by means of pivot pins 32 so that the pitman bars 20 can be swung outwardly as shown by dotted outline in Fig. 3] and then to the position shown in Fig. 4 when they are not in use and while the spudding beams are at work. The walkin beam members 13 are connected to theshiift 23 by .U-bolts 26. The pulley or wheel 27 is rigid with the shaft 22 for driving this shaft and the wheel can be driven by any suitable power. I
The uprights 4 are inclined forward so that the derrick 28 may be inclined far enough to bring the drilling tools vertically over the well. The uprights 4 are braced by cr0-ss-beam2, longitudinal frame members 1, and by a cross frame member 29. The derriok 28 is pivotally mounted on the pivot bar or shaft 30. The derrick 28 may be swung backwardly when not in use and duringtransportation to a substantially horizontal position and rest on the backend of the machine. The frame member 29 and the upright 4 are further braced by the bars 31 which are bolted to the frame member 29 and to the base members 1.
The advantage of making the walking beam 13 in the fornr shown is that the base or operated end is spread to receive the fulcrum post 10 between the walking beam members 13 and the operating end is contracted for causing the shoe 18 to run cen 'trally over the well. The spread ends at the operated end forma braceto prevent lateral motion of the operating end of the walking beam. The curvature of the shoe 18 on the-part next to the chain serves to center the chain in a direction at right angles to the walking beam. The spreading of the walking beam members brings the support of the walking beam near the two ends of the pivot or supporting shaft 23 and thus prevents the load from being thrown on the central portion of the shaft 23.
Various changes in the several parts may be made without departing from my invention. The construction above set forth provides a machine with a dual capacity, either of which may be utilized at will.
What I claim, is,--
1. In a well-drilling machine, provided with a frame and a driving shaft rovided with cranks and crank-pins; an upright fulcrum member rigid with said frame, a fulcrum mounted in said upright, a walking beam, means for pivotally connectinmsaid walking beam to said fulcrum incl uding plates under and against the walking beam and stirrups hung on said fulcrum and attached to said plates, a pivot shaft, and pitman bars pivotally connected to said pivot shaft and said cranks.
2. In a well drilling machine, provided with a frame and a driving shaft provided with cranks and crank-pins; a walking beam, an upright bearing member rigid witi said frame and projecting past said walking beam, a fulcrum carried in said upright, means for pivotally connecting said walking-beam to said fulcrum consisting of plates disposed under said beam and stirrups hung on said fulcrum and attached to said plates, a pivot shaft at the operated end of said walking beam, and means operatively connecting said walking-beam to said pivot-shaft consisting of adjustable bearings mounted on said shaft and pitman bars pivotally connected to said cranks and said bearings.
3. A well drillin machine having a walking beam and a ulcrum therefor, operat: ing cranks, and means for pivotally connecting said cranks to said walking beam con sisting of a pivot shaft for said walking beam, bearings mounted on said pivot shaft, pitman bars, plates attached to said itman bars and pivotally connecte to sai bearings, and means for pivotally. connecting said pitman bars to said cranks.
