Description
N. PETERS, PHOTO LITNOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
O. H. GOULD, OF CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,648, dated September 2, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHAs. H. GOULD, of Concord, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring BeoLBottoms of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 isa side view; Fig. 2 a plan; Fig. 3 a section upon the line A, A, of Fig. 2.
My invention consists in a peculiar method of arranging the springs and adapting them to the bedstead slats by which means all the advantages of a spring bed bottom are obtained at a very small cost, and the parts may all be easily detached for the purpose of cleansing, as will now be more clearly described.
In the said drawings A is the bedstead; B the slats which are pivoted or hinged in any suitable manner to the bottom rail, so that they may be at liberty to rise and fall at the opposite end as required. Near the head of the bedstead the cross bar C is placed, being hung in the stirrups f attached to the side rails; upon this bar are supported the springs D upon which rest the slats, there being one spring for each slat.
E is a band of leather or other suitable material, the ends of which are nailed to the side rails at g, and to each of the slats at c by which means the upper ends of the slats are held in place. In lieu of thus permanently securing the band E to the side rails and slats, it may be connected therewith by buttons, which will facilitate their removal for cleansing, scalding, &c.
The spring bed bottoms heretofore constructed are liable to sink lower at the head than at the foot, as the weight of the body is nearer to the head than the foot. It is evident however that this can never occur with the above described bed bottom as the slats are so arranged that the upper end can never sink below the points at which the foot of the slats are secured.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The within described spring bed-bottom constructed essentially of the slats B pivoted at the lower ends, the bar O, springs D and band E operating in the manner substantially as herein set forth.
O. H. GOULD.
