Description
R. G. FERNANDEZ TOOL Sept. 16, 1924. 1,508,967
Filed Aug. 31, 1923 H mm R. a. rmmz NVENTOR A BY a n/mm Patented Sept. 16, 1924.
UNITED STATES ROGELIO G. FERNANDEZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Application filed August 31. 1923.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, Rocnuo G. FERNAN- uEz. a citizen of the Republic of Cuba, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specifi cation.
This invention relates to tools and more particularly to a tool of the combination type.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a tool including a pair of pliers whose jaws are movably connected to the ends of a pair of pivoted levcrs so as to ermit the jaws to come into flat contact wit surfaces of various angularities.
Another object of the invention is to provide an instrument in which is embodied a plurality of tools such as a hammer, nail puller, wire cutter, punch. and dies for threading screws of various pitches.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a tool which is extremely simple in construction, consisting of relatively few parts, thereby rendering the same cheap of manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particular- 1y pointed out in the appended claims. and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved combination tool showing a portion of the handle broken away in section,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the jaws, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the aws.
I am aware that patents have been issued for combination tools, but it is not believed that there has been a tool of this type embodying a pair of pliers whose jaws are pivotally mounted so as to permit the gripping surfaces to lie flush against the object being gripped.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the reference numerals 5 and 6 designate a pair of levers each formed with a handle 7 at one end and being pivotally mounted as at 8 intermediate their ends. The other ends of the levers 5 and 6 each TOOL. i i
Serial No. 660,403.
have jaws 9 pivotally mounted thereto as at 10. The jaws 9 are formed to provide a gripping surface 11, and a pair of cars 12 between which the ends of the levers are received. It will be seen that when the jaws are opened to grip a nut or other like ob ject, the same will adapt themselves to con tact flush with the surface of the nut irrespective of its size. Should it be desired to lock the jaws in a rigid condition, I provide the ears 12 of each jaw with suitable apertures 13 for registration with an open ing 13' in the end of each lever for receiv ing a pin 14 which enters the registering apertures. It will thus be seen that when the pins are inserted the jaws will be locked against pivotal movement. The lever 5 is provided with an opening 15 whereby the pivotal point 8 may be changed so as to permit the further expansion of the jaws 9 when desired.
I form the lever 5 with a suitable hammer surface 16 and claws 17 for withdrawing nails and other like fastening elements. The levers 5 and 6 are also provided with suitable knife edges 18 to the rear of the pivotal point 8 whereby the same may be employed for cutting wire. The handle 7 of the lever 6 has pivotally secured thereto a punch 19 which. co-acts with a suitable seat 20 formed on the handle 7 of the lever 5. This is very handy in punching holes in leather or light metal. When the punch 19 is not in use the same may be swung into a spring catch 21 secured to the underside of the handle 7 of the lever 6. The handles 7 of both levers are provided with a plurality of dies 22 of various sizes to permit the threading of screws of different sizes. The ends of the handle 7 of the levers 5 and 6 are respectively provided with a sharpened portion 23 for driving holes, and a screwdriver 24.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that there has been described a combina tion tool which produces the most essential instruments required for use of a skilled mechanic or the same may be used for a household article.
What is claimed as new is 1. A too-1 comprising a pair of members pivotally connected together intermediate their ends, handles formed on one end of said members and movably mounted jaws mounted on the other end, and means comprising openings in the last-mentioned end of each member for registration with openings in its respective javu and a pin insertible through the registered openings for rendering said movable jaws stationary.
2. A pliel' comprising a pair of members-s pivotally conneci'ed togeiher nfernleiiinie their ends. handles formed on one end of said members, and roastingnn ans mo nivi v mounted on the other end of said members for gripping Contact wifli surfaces of various gages. and removable means compris ing openings in the last-mentioned end of each member for registration with openings in its respective jaw, and a pin insertible through the registered openings for rendering said co-ucting means immovable with re spent to said members.
In tesrimon whereof I have afiixed my signature.
ROGELIO G. FERNANDEZ.
