Be it known that 1, James D. KELLER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Knee Boot, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in horse-pads, especially those which prevent injury to the knees because of interfering, and its object is to provide an auxiliary pad for devices of this diameter which shall be so soft and resilient that no damage will result from the frequent blows of the hoof and shoe when the horse is traveling very fast.

The ordinary knee boot is made of stiff leather very lightly padded and this boot not only transmits the blows of the hoof of the other leg directly to the knee of the animal, but, because of its unyielding nature, soon becomes cut and slashed by the sharp edges of the shoe.

he present invention consists of a soft pad, preferably of sponge rubber covered with leather, extending from about the middle of the surface of the ordinary knee boot around back to its rear edge, the thickness of the pad preferably decreasing rearwardly.

It further consists of the details of construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing and, particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing, Fig. l is an inside elevation and Fig. 2 an outside elevation of this improved knee-boot. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

The boot shown in the drawing is generally of well known construction having an exterior 1 of strong and fairly stiff leather, a lining 2 of soft leather or fabric, a cushion 3 of curled hair, cotton or any other desired material and of any desired size between them, tabs f and 5 of leather to which the eyelets 6 are attached, a strap 7 and buckle 8 to secure the boot in position, two straps 9 and 10, preferably of elastic ribbon and a buckle 11, and a loop 12 to support these straps. 5, and suspenders 14 with hooks 15 of any desired character at their lower ends may be used to support the boot.

Attached to the exterior 1 and extending I rearwardly from about the middle thereof is a soft pad consisting of a cover 16, preferably of soft tough leather and a cushion 17, preferably of sponge rubber. This pad tapers rearwardly so that it will not present a shoulder to be struck by the other hoof of the animal wearing the boot. This pad is rounded in every direction so that no sharp corners are presented and the danger of the pad being ripped off is reduced to a minimum. As the boot is held in the desired position by means of the straps and suspenders, this new pad may always be at the point where the horse usually strikes in interfering and the heavy blows now often delivered against the side of the leg at the knee joint will be cushioned to such an extent that lameness will not result tlierefrom.

The dimensions of this pad and the thickness and resilience of its cushioning material may all be changed by those skilled in the art without departing from my invention as set forth in the following claims.

I claim 1. A knee boot consisting of a tion having means to secure it of the animal and a resilient pad on the exterior of the boot in the rear 0 i the middle portion thereof, said pad having a rounded surface and tapering from front to rear.

2. A knee boot consisting of a body cushioned portion having means to secure it to the leg of the animal and a resilient pad on the exterior of the boot in the rear of the middle portion thereof, said pad being oblong with rounded ends and with its greatest dimension upright when the boot is in position and tapering from front to rear.

3. A knee boot consisting of a body portion and means to secure it in position, a. cushion within said body portion, and a pad on the exterior of the cushioned part of the body portion consisting of a leather covering and a filling of sponge rubber and tapering from front to rear.
