Be it known that I, RUs'roMJr J. GUZDAR, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the District of I-Iowrah, in the Province of Bengal and Empire of India, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pen Clips, of which the following is a specication.

This invention relates to a fountain pen holder or clip. i

The object of the invention is to provide a clip designed to perform the double function of a holder holder to adapt it for use as a pencil.

Another object is to so construct such a device that the fountain pen on which it is mounted becomes the pencil holder when the lead is to be used for writing.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure l represents a side elevation of a fountain pen with this improved clip shown applied and in connection with the pocket in which the pen is to be retained shown in section.

.The clip l constituting this invention is shown applied to a fountain pen P and comprises a split band 2 sufficiently elastic to cause it when placed on the pen to firmly grip it and hold the clip in adjusted position on the pen.

Carried by the band 2. are two spring presed jaws 3 and 4, jaw 4 being fixed to the band intermediately of the length of said jaw and preferably made integral therewith, although not necessarily so. These jaws 3 and 4 taper toward one end and are each provided with a longitudinally extended groove 5 designed to receive a penfor a pen and as a leadl cil lead l() and to hold it securely clamped between them, said clamping being effected by means of a coiled spring 8 arranged between the rear ends of the jaws. These jaws are pivotally connected intermediate their ends preferably adjacent one edge of band 2 andv are each equipped with a pair of laterally extended apertured lugs or ears. The ears of one jaw overlap those of the other and are designed to receive the pintles 9 which pivotally connect the jaws. The coiled spring 8 which is arranged between the rear ends of the jaws 3 and 4 has its opposed ends seated in cup shaped sockets 7 carried by said jaw ends, said sockets being opposed to each other as is shown clearly in Fig. 2. It will be obvious that the tension of the spring 8 will operate to force the rear ends of the jaws 3 and 4 apart and their front ends toward each other so that a lead v10 inserted in the grooves of the front ends of the jaws will be firmly gripped and held thereby to adapt the device to be used as a pencil when desired, it being shown arranged for this purpose in Fig. 2.

In Fig. 1 the device is shown applied to a pocket p, the pen P being as is usual disposed within the pocket and the jaws 3 and 4 straddling its upper edge ,and firmly gripping it.

From the above description it will be obvious that the coiled spring 8 operates when the device is used as shown in Fig. 1 to secure th-e clip to the pocket of the user, while in Figs. 2 and 3 it is shown for clamping the lead l0 between the grooved ends of the jaws so that the clip may be used either to hold a pen holder secured to a pocket or to adapt the holder for use as a pencil when the lead 10 is employed.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of op eration of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. A device of the class described comprising an` attaching band, a pair of jaws carried thereby and pivotally connected intermediate their ends, the clamping ends of said jaws being grooved longitudinally, and a coiled' spring arranged between the other ends.

2. A device of the class described, c0mprising a split attaching banda pair otj aws carried thereby, said jaws being pivetally connected with each other intermediate their ends and one iixedly mounted on` said band, the front ends of said jaws tapering to a point and having grooves on their inner faces extending longitudinally thereof, the 'rear ends. having opposed sockets, and a coiled spring mounted in said sockets.

A; devicel of the` class described comprising' a pair of pivotally connected jaws, means for attaching one of said jaws to an object, said jaws being longitudinally grooved at one end on their opposed faces to receive and hold a pencil lead, and a spring to hold said jaws in clamping engagement. 4

4. A device of the class described comprising a pair of jaws pivotally connected intermediate their ends, and positioned one over the other, an attaching band fixed to one of said jaws in advance of its pivotal connection, the front ends of said jaws having longitudinally extended grooves in their inner faces,4 the rear ends of said jaws having cup shaped sockets arranged opposite each other, and a coiled spring arranged between said jaws and seated in said sockets.
