Description
H. L` KRANZ.
POCKET TOOL HOLDER.

immnnmumu@ W.
Arron/vers gli HERMAN LUDWIG KRANZ, OE BRGOKLYN, NEW YORK.
POCKET TOOlli-HOLDER.
Application filed September 18, 1919.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, HERMAN L. KRANZ, citizen of the United States, and resident ol" Brooklyn, in the county 01"' Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pocket Tool-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for securely retaining tools, implements, and the like, in the pocket, and has for its object to provide such a device which is simple in construction, inexpensive in cost of manufacture, and readily insertible into the pocket oi the carrier of the tool, implement, or the like..
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters oi reference refer to like-named parts on the drawings, of which- Figure l represents a front elevational view ot' my device with a rule retained thereby for the purposes or' illustration.
Fig. -2 represents a side elevational view Tlv device.
` fJ represents a sectional view oit my aken on the line fir-A ot' Fig. 2.
2 represents a view illustrating the of my device in practice.
.'erring now detail to the drawings, my device comprises main frame constructed preferably of a continuous or endless wire l bent into the configuration illustrated, so as to form mouth-like holder having two legs 2, and 8. Thus my device is of a substantially U-shaped appearance in iront elevation, and of an inverted substanlially 'Ll-shaped appearance in side elevation. A sheet-metal wing d is stretched between each pair oi opposite members ot the trame l, and is folded' back and securely clamped as at 5, without the of rivets or other binding means. t is apparent that the aws let the mouth otmy device are flexible, and may oe readily separated so as to clamp a tool or the like between them and thus retain the same. Likewise it is `apparent that the opposite legs 2 and 3 are flexible, and may. be readily sepa-rated or brought nearer to each other. rlhis latter property availed of in my device; l insert the same into the pocket, the legs 2 and 3 first, holding the same pressed toward each other, and then, when the same are in the pocket, I release the pressure on them, allowing them Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
Serial No. 324,427.
to separate, whence they are Jforced against the interior of the pocket, preventing the device iroin falling out or even from torceul removal.
Having the device then in the pocket, the rule, or tool, or implement, is inserted between the jaws t, which give way and then securely clamp and retain the said rule or the like, preventing it from falling out or even from forceful withdrawal by a thief.
l slit the wings d as at 7, and insert the ends of a patch of cloth or felt, or the like 6, through said slits from the inside, said felt being stretched so as to provide a smooth, soft surface. The purpose of this is to provide a smooth surface for contact with the rule or other article, so that the saine will not be scratched or otherwise injured or marked. The use of my device is indicated in Fig. i, which shows a rule 8 held in my device between the jaws 4f, and the legs 2 and 3 secured in the pocket 9 ci a mechanicls overalls.
lt is obvious that my invention supplies a much-needed want, as most mechanics have experienced the inconvenience of having their rules or tools drop from their pockets, particularly without their knowledge. VVith my device such accidents are impossible, and likewise thei't of a rule or tool from the pocket is also impossible.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent is follows:
l. In a device of the class described, means for retaining a tool, implement, or the like comprising an endless wire bent into pair of substantially U-shaped jaws, said wire also providing pair of mutually divergent legs for securing the device in the pocket, .sa-id jaws and legs being resilient,l said jaws also being mutually divergent, each having -a band of sheet metal or the like extending over the saine, and felt or the like on said bands for providing a smooth surface upon which said tool, impleine-nt, or the like is adapted to slide on insertion into or removal from said device.
Q'. ln a device of the class described, means for retaining a tool, implement, or the like, comprising a pair of mutually divergent jaws and a pair o'F mutually divergent legs, and a body portion joining said jaw and leg portions, all formed of an endless resilient wire, said jaws being mutually divergent in e direction at right angles to the direction ot divergency of said legs, and means for guiding' seid tool, implement, or the like into said device consisting of e bend of sheet metal or Jfhe like stretched across each jew,
and e smooth surace inside each jaw Colnposcd of .a plece of felt or the llke, said hands having parallel slots therein through which said felt or the like passes and is thereby retained in said bands. l0 Signed at New York in the county of Kings end State of New York this 5th day of September A. D. 1919.
