BENJAMIN F. STEPHENSON, OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY.
HAIR-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application filed April 30, 1918. Serial No. 231,612.
therewith by means of W ich a person may readily cut or triin his own or anothers hair.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character including a holder adapted to be detachably secured to a comb for the purpose of holding acutting blade in proper position against the comb teeth.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a comb having a blade holder attached thereto, the construction of the holder being such that the blade can be readily removed therefrom without disturbing the position of the holder on the comb.
The above and other objects and advantages' of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view partly in section showing the complete device.
Fig. 2 is an edge View of the holder.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the holder showing the blade in position, and,
Fig. 4 is an end view.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates comb of usual construction to which my invention is attached, and in the present instance, the invention includes a U-shaped plate 2 securely clamped upon the comb by means of the resilient arms 3 and 4. Adjacent the lower edge thereof, the arm 3 of the plate is provided with a longitudinally extending raised portion 5 adapted for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
Secured to the plate 2 is a blade locking member or clamp 6 which is also U-shaped and is provided on the lateral margins of its folded edge with outwardly extendglg tongues 7 which are adapted to be pas through spaced apertures 8 formed in the folded edge of the plate 2. One arm 9 of the clamp extends a considerable distance past the lower edge of the arm 3 of the plate to provide a clamping guard portion 10 and is provided just above said guard with an outwardly pressed raised portion 11 which is positioned adjacent the raised portion 5 and is so arranged that 5 rests in 11 at times. The
opposite arm of the clamp is reduced to form a thumb piece 12 and is spaced from thearm 4: by means of a fiat spring 13 which has one end secured to the arm 4: and is doubled upon itself so that its opposite end engages the under surface of the thumb piece 12.
The openings 8 which receive the tongues 7 are made large enough to allow the clamp to have a slight pivotal movement, so that when the thumb piece 12 is forced outwardly by the spring 13 the guard 10 will be pressed in firmly against the arm 3. The cutting blade is indicated at 14 and is adapted to be engaged with the arm 3 below the raised portion 5 and is held firmly in engagement with said arm by means of the guard 10 which is pressed against the blade and forces the sharpened edge thereof firmly against the teeth of the comb as shown to advantage in Fig. 4. To position the blade, the thumb piece 12 is pressed inwardly against the action of the spring 13 thus spaclng the guard 10 from the arm 3 and allowing the blade to be placed therebetween. The raised portion 5 forms an abutment which engages the blade to prevent vertical movement of the same during the operation of the device.
In using my device, the comb is taken in one hand and passed throu h the hair in the same manner as if com ing the same, the blade carried by the comb cutting a certain amount of the hair every time it is moved therethrough and the cutting action of the device can be varied by changing the angle at which the device is held when being moved through the hair.
It is to be understood that I have shown and described only the preferred embodiment of my invention and that I reserve the right to make such changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts thereof as may come within the scope of theappended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim 1. A hair cutter, including in combination a comb, a U-shaped plate received on said comb and provided on one side with a longitudinally extending raised portion, a blade shaped clamp having engaged with said plate beneath said raised portion, and a clamp to hold said blade in engagement with said plate.
2. A hair cutter, including in combination a comb, a U-shaped plate received on said comb and having one side thereof provided with a longitudinally extending raised por-. tion, a blade engaged with said side beneath said raised portion, and a U-shaped clamp having its folded edge pivotally secured to the folded edge of said plate and adapted to hold the blade in engagement therewith.
3. A hair cutter, including in combination a comb, a U-shaped plate received on said comb and provided on one side with a longitudinally extending raised portion, a U- its folded edge pivotally secured tothe folded edge of said plate, ablade engaged with one side of said plate beneath said raised portion and adapted to' 'be held in engagement therewith by one side of said clamp, and a spring interposed between the opposite sides of said clamp and plate; I
4. A hair cutter, including in combination a comb a U-shaped plate having its sides engaged with the opposite sides of said comb,
a U-shaped clam having its sides inclosing I the sides of sai plate, said plate havinopenings formed in the folded edge thereo tongues extending laterally. from the folded edge of .said clamp and adapted to be received in said openings, a spring interposed between said clamp and a plate on one side if of said comb and a blade received between spring arms engaging opposite sides of said comb, an abutment formedv on one of said arms, a blade engaged with said arm beneath said abutment, a spring secured to the opposite of said spring arms, a, U-shaped clamp member secured to said plate, laterally extending :tongues formed on said clamp and adapted to be received in openings formed in said plate, one side of said clamp reduced to form a thumb piece engaging said spring, the opposite sides of said clamp being elongated to form a clamping guard adapted to press against said blade.
6, A hair cuitter comprising in combination, a comb, a blade holder comprising a pair of U-shaped clamping plates havlng the folded edges thereof plvotally secured together, one of said clamping plates being adapted to be received upon the comb, and a a blade secured between said plates and dis:- posed on one side of the comb.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnessese.
BENJAMIN STEPHENSON.
