BERTHA B. BRIGHT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DRESS.
Application filed August 30, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTHA It. BRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dresses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in dresses and has for its object to produce a very simple. dress fitted to the figure by easily applied separable fasteners such that the plaits can be largely unfolded for packing or storage or for the purpose of pressing or, if made of washable material, when it is desired to launder the garment. Another object of my invention is to provide a dress in which these fastening devices are easily applied so that quantities of the fabric portion may be kept in stock and easily and quickly adapted to the figures of difierent individuals.
The following is a description of an embodiment of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 shows in perspective a threequarter front view of a dress as'it appears upon the person, while Fig. 2 shows a similar back view;
Fig. 3 shows a front view of the body portion of the dress removed and extended, the fastening devices being separated;
Fig. 4 shows a similar back view; and
Fig. 5 shows asection on the line 55, Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, l and 2 are respectively the front and back portions of the dress, the same preferably being made from single breadths so as to be without any vertical seams, and cut into substantially the shape shown. These two breadths are sewed together by seams at 3%, the seam 3 on the left side of Fig. 3 extending from the bottom to the point 5 at the arm hole, and the seam 4 on the right hand side from the bottom to a point 6 slightly above the waist line. From the point 6 to the point 7 located at the arm hole two edges of the breadths are provided with separable fastener members 89 so that they can be separably fastened together. lhe two breadths are sewn together at the left-hand top ends along the line 10 to form the shoulder, while at the right-hand ends they are provided with separable fastener members 1112 so that they can be easily Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1 7, 1918. Serial No. 252,004.
secured together and separated as desired. The fastenings 89 and 11-12 enable the easy putting on of the dress and removal of the same.
The structure as above described constitutes a dress of the slip type and is kept in stock in quantity.
Upon the sale of a garment the slip is fitted to the figure in the following manner, the garment with separable fasteners applled as described constituting my invention:
As in ordinary ready made wear, the lower hem is turned up to make the dress the proper length. The waist line of the wearer is then determined and belt straps 13 are fastened at the side seams, these straps being sewn on at their ends and center so as to produce two loops 14 and 15, the upper loops 14 being preferably at the waist line. in line with the loops 14 and slightly removed from the center line of the back breadth, two stud fastener-members 16, 17 are sewn to the fabric in the ordinary manner. Between each of these stud members and its corresponding loop 14 the fabric is then folded so as to form a shallow vertical plait 18 and socket fastener-members 16, 17 are secured to the sides of said plaits facing the medial line of the breadth and adapted to be snapped upon the stud members 16, 17 nearest thereto so as to produce two loose folds in the back of the garment. Slightly above the stud members 16, 17 a small horizontal tuck 19 is then formed and to the upper surface of this tuck a separable stud member 20 is sewn. This horizontal tuck assists in giving a proper fit or hang to the back of the garment and also furnishes a secure backing for the separable member 20 sewn thereto.
On the front of the garment two similar stud members 21, 22 are sewn, preferably on a'line slightly below the centers of the loops 14 and somewhat further apart than the stud members 16, 17 on the back of the garment. Between each of these stud members and the central line of the front breadth a narrow plait 23 is formed and to each of said plaits is sewn a socket member as shown at 21, 22' adapted to snap upon the corresponding stud members 21, 22, these socket members facing outwardly upon said plaits. After these fasteners have been applied and the stud and socket members have been snapped together and the garment is put on, a belt 2% is threaded through the loops 1% and 15, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The belt is crossed in the back as shown in Fig. 2 and the under layer of the belt is provided with a fastener-member 25 adapted to engage the member 20 upon the horizontal plait so as to hold the beltin position, the member 25 being located nearer one end of the belt than the other.
I somewhat prefer the snap fasteners to the ordinary hook and eye for separably securing the slip garment in folds at the waist, and have therefore shown and described my preferred embodiment as provided with that type of fastener.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, various modifications may be made in the embodiment of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
f/ hat 1 claim is:
l. A dress of the slip type, a plurality of pairs of separable fasteners located upon both the front and the back breadths of the dress substantially at the waist line producing, when in engagement, a plurality of vertically extending folds.
2. A. dress of the slip type, two pairs of separable fasteners located upon both the front and the back breadths of the dress substantially at the waist line, one member of each front pair being secured to a corre sponding vertically extending plait, said plaits being located between the other two members;
3, A dress of the slip type, two pairs of separable her-members located uoon both the front and the loacl: breadths of the menses dress substantially at the waist line, one member of each front pair being secured to a corresponding vertically extending plait, said plaits being formed between the other two members, one member of each of the back pairs being mounted upon a corresponding vertically extending plait, the other back fastener members being located between said back plaits.
i. A dress of the slip type, provided with side loops at approximately the waist line, a plurality of pairs of separable fasteners located upon both the front and the back breadths of the dress substantially at the waist line, a horizontal plait located in the back breadth slightly above the waist line and having a fastener member secured thereto and a belt passing around the waist and through said loops, said belt being provided with a fastener member adapted to engage the fastener member upon said horizontal plait.
5. A dress of the slip type, provided with side loops at approximately the waist line and loops below said first named loops, a plurality of pairs of separable fasteners located upon both the front and the back breadths of the dress substantially at the waist line, a horizontal plait located in the back slightly above the waist line and having a fastener member secured thereto and a belt passing twice around the waist and through said upper and lower loops, said belt beprovided with a fastener member --e adapted engage the fastener member upon said horizontal plait.
