Be itknown that we, HARRY H. Pimsoo'i'r and EDWARD H. CoNsiDiNE, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a new a-nd useful Double Check- Valve, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains generally to valves, and aims to provide an automatic double check valve for a vent pipe or the like, the structure being attachable to one end of a pipe for admitting air, gas or fluid into the pipe from one poi-t and discharging the air or fluid through another port, the end of the pipe being normally closed by the valves when there is no flow of fluid,
It is the object of the invention to provide a double check valve of novel and iniproved construction, which is extremely simple and inexpensive, as well as being thoroughly practical and efficient in ilse.
With. the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as' the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement ofiparts andin the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the 5device.
Fig. 2 is a median vertical section thereof.
In carrying out the present invention, there is provided. a horizontally' elongated relatively flat casing 1 of rectangular outline in side elevation, with its bottom open. The casingl is provided within its lower ortion intermediate the ends with a short conduit 2 terminating in a depending nipple 3 which is threaded or otherwise formed for attachment to the upper end of a vent pipe, or the like. The conduit or portion 2 provides opposite downwardly opening ports 41and 5 between the conduit 2 and the ends of the casing, the port 4 being the exhaust or discharge port, and the port 5 being the inlet port.
The casing is provided between its sides with a vertical partition 6 extending vfrom the top of the casing to the upper end of theconduit 2 between opposite sides thereof, and said partition has an extension 7 projecting downwardly within the conduit 2, there being a port or opening 8 between the partition 6 and one side of the conduit 2, and ahorizontal partition 9 between the partition 6 and the opposite side of the conduit. The partition 9 is provided with an opening 10 and an upstanding annular boss 11 surrounding said opening and providing a seat for a ball valve 12 which seats by gravity upon the valve seat, and this provides a check valve for permitting the tlow of air or iuid from the pipe to the outlet or discharge port 4 but to prevent the low of air or fluid into the pipe from said outlet or port 4. The casing 1 has a transverse bar or partition 13 between its sides abovethat side wall of the conduit 2 with which the partition 9 is integral, and said bar 13 is spaced from the partition 9 and top of the casing, to provide openings above and below thesame. These openings above and below the bar 13 permit of the flow of uid past said bar without interference, and the lower opening permits sediment and other foreign matter to be drained or cleaned from the valve seat. A horizontal partition 14, preferably in the same plane as the partition 9, connects that side wall ofthe conduit 2 remote from vthe partition 9 with the respective ends of the ball valve 17. Said valve 1T is seatable b v gravity, the same as the valve 12, and permits of the flow of air oi' fluid into the casing by way of the inleti, to prevent the discharge of'fluid through said inlet. The parts 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 13, 14 and 18 can all be cast integral with the casing l,
thereby to provide a cheap yet eliicient construction.
The top of the casin 1 is provided with openings 19 and 2O a ove the respective valve seats 11 and 16, and said openings are normally closedby the removable screw plugs 21 and 22, respectively. When the plugs are removed, this gives access to thefvalves and' their seats, whereby the valves canA be removed and replaced, and the valve seats are cleaned.
Air or other fluid can flow into the pipe to which the nipple 3 is attached, by way pf the inlet 5, opening 15, opening or port 8, conduit 2 and nipple 3the valve 12 remaining seated, but when the air or fluid is forced from the pipe, the valve 17 will seat and the valve 12 is unseated to permit the air or uid to be. discharged by way of the opening 10 and outlet 4.-.
