To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODORE R. \Vnmn- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Bag and Similar Article, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to hand bags, pocket books, and similar articles, and its object is to provide a new and improved article of the type referred to, arranged with a partition to divide a pocket into separate compartments, the partition being held at all times in intermediate 01' middle position relative to the sides of the pocket'to allow the user to have ready access to either com partment on opening the pocket. Another object is to decrease the bulkiness of the article.

In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a partition extending within the pocket, parallel with and intermediate of the sides of the pocket, to divide the latter into two compartments, and means holding the said partition in central position intermediate the sides of the pocket Whether the latter is open or closed.

A. practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of'this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand bag provided with the improvements and, shown with the parts in open position;

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same; and

Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same.

The improved pocket is shown incorporated in a hand bag having the usual front and rear pockets 1.0 and 11 open at the top, and a frame pocket 12 intermediate the front and rear pockets 10 and 11. The rear pocket 11 has its back extended to form a closing flap 13 adapted to be fastened to the front of the front pocket 10 by suitable fastening members 14 and 15, such as press buttons having stud and socket members. 24 is made in the usual sections connected with each other by pivots 25 arranged at the middle of the ends 23 which permit of opening and closing the pocket 12. The frame 24 is also provided with the usual closing device in the form of a spring catch 27 adapted to engage a keeper 28. The front side 21 of the central frame pocket 12 is fastened by stitches 30 to the rear side 31 of the front pocket 10, and similar stitches 32 connect the rear side 22 of the central frame pocket 12 with the front side 33 of the rear pocket 11, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3.

l/Vithin the central frame pocket 12 is arranged a lengthwise extending partition 40 attached at its lower edge to the middle of the bottom 20 of the central frame pocket 12, and the partition 12 is provided at the lower portions of its ends with extensions 41 fastened to auxiliary folds 42 formed integrally with the folding ends 23 of the central frame pocket 12. The partition 40 is provided at the top and the ends with a metallic frame 43, of which the top is below the top members of the metallic frame 24 while thevends 44 of the frame 43 extend in close proximity to the ends 23 of the pocket 12. On the ends 44 are fastened upright guide rods 45 slidingly engaged by bearings 46 formed integrally on the pivots 25 of the frame 24 of the central frame pocket 12. When the pocket 12 is closed then the bearings 46 are near the lower ends of the guide rods 45 (see Fig. 2), and when the pocket 12 is opened then the bearings 46 slide up on the guide rods 45 and as the pivots 25 carrying the said bearings 46 are at all times in a central position relative to the pocket 12 it is evident thatthe partition 40 is held in central position within the pocket 12 whether the latter is opened or closed or partly open. It is understood that the partition 40 is held in this central position owing to the attachment of the extension 41 to the auxiliary folds 42, but swaying of the partition in a lateral direction is prevented by the bearings 46 slidingly engaging the guide rods 45. In addition to v the function mentioned, the bearings 46 and the guide rods 45 positively hold the partition 40 in central position within the pocket 12, as above described. It will be noticed that by arranging the partition 40 centrally in the pocket 12 the latter is divided into equal sized compartments to which convenient access is had whenever the pocket is opened.

The front pocket 10 of the hand bag may be provided with a longitudinal partition 50 and the back member of the rear pocket 11 may be provided at the inner side with a' small pocket 51 for containing a mirror or the like.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A hand bag and similar article pro vided with a pocket having a frame made of sections having a movable hinge connec tion to permit of opening and closing the frame, a partition within the pocket intermediate the sides thereof and extending from one endof the pocket to the other end thereof, the partition dividing the pocket into two compartments, and engaging means engaging a part carried by said hinge c011- nection, for holding the partition in central position while the frame is in open position.

A hand bag and similar article provided with a pocket having a frame made of sections hinged together to permit of opening and closing the frame, a partition within the pocket and extending from one end of the pocket to the other end thereof, guides on the ends of the partition, and hearings on the frame and slidinglyengagsaid guides.

A hand bag and similar article provided with a pocket having a metallic frame made in sections hinged together, the ends of the pocket being provided with main folds adapted to open and close on opening and closing the said pocket frame, the ends of the pockets having auxiliary central folds intermediate the bottom of the pocket and the pivots of the said pocket frame, a parti-" tion extending lengthwise in the said pocket and having its lower edge secured to the bottom of the pocket, the partition having outward extensions at the lower portions of the ends, the said extensions being attached to the said auxiliary central folds, the ends of the partition above the said extensions having upright guide rods, and hearings on the pivots of the said frame and engaging the said guide rods. v
