PAPER BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 14, 1915. Serial No..28,167.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER R. WARREN, citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented'a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention, relates to an improvement in knock down boxes and has for its object the production of a foldingbox which is particularly adapted to hold and display puslrpins, hangers, thumb tacks, hair pins, pencils and various otherarticles While boxes for this purpose have been produced heretofore, they have commonly been of tubular form and are therefore relatively expensive to produce for they are formed of two separate blanks each of which must be cut to the proper shape and passed separately through a gluing machine. The box embodying my invention. may be constructed from a single blank of sheet material such as card board, or the like which reduces the number of members to be handled in the dieing out and pasting op-,
eration. By this arrangement the expense of production is greatly reduced so that the finished box does not cost more than oneehalf as much as those heretofore in use. The box embodying my invention is so constructed that the push-pins contained therein are held at all times in. proper position so that they cannot become displaced.
A further-object of my invention is to provide a box which may be shipped flat display holder of its contents.
r box partially folded.
so as to take up a minimum 'of space and which may be opened up by the retailer in a manner hereinafter to be employed by the retailer as an attractive My invention will be fully' understood from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearlydefined in the claims at the close of the specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a' box blank.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the box in knock down position. V
Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing the n perspective showing Fig.4 is a view i the box completelry folded.
These be described, and
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
. has been out to the proper shape as shown in Fig. 1. .It is provided with front, top, back andbottom portions 12, 13, 14 and 15' respectively which are separated by the usual creasedlines of fold'as shown. The back portion 14 has secured to each end thereof side members 16 and 17 which are in turn prov dedwith sector shaped tucks 20 and 21 and covering members 18 and 19 for the purposes hereinafter to be set forth. parts are so arranged that they may be folded on the lines of crease designated Patented May 15, 1917.
to form a completely closed in box'23 as shown in Fig. 4.
In order to provide a shelf or supporting member upon which the hangers or pushpins may rest and be firmly secured in position an inner box 24 is provided which is completely inclosed within the outer box 23. This inner box is'formed by portions 25, 26 and 27 which are also a part of the blank 11 and which form the front, top and back respectively ofthe inner box 24. Side members 28 and 29 having tucks 30 and 31 are secured to the portion 26 to enable the inner box to be set up, the front portion 25 being provided with a sight opening 40 for purposes hereinafter to be set forth. v
The blank which has been cut to the shape described is provided with suitable printing matter for advertising purposes and the like preferably on both sides and is passed through a suitable gluing machine to enable the portion 27 to. be secured to the portion 14. The blank is'then in knock down position as shown in Fig. 5 so that it may be shipped fiat and may be readily folded to form the completed box for folding the push-pins or hangers. In folding the box the sides 28 and 29 are folded down as shown in Fig. 6 and secured in position by the tucks 30 and 31. In this manner a shelf or supporting member for the pushpins is provided, the portion26 having suitable holes'32 whichare adapted to receive the shanks 33 of the push-pins 34 to retain them in position. The sides 16-and 17 of the backportion 14 of the box23 are then folded in parallel with the sides 28 and 29 and the tucks and 21 are inserted within back portion and front portion of the outer box 23 are deeper than the corresponding portions of the inner box 24 in order to pro-1 vide sufiicieiit space for the heads of the push-pins 34. The parts should be so arranged that the push-pins fit snugly up against the top of the outer boxfso that they cannot become displaced from their respective positions.
I find that it is often desirable to have a display holder for the contents of the box and the blank is accordingly arranged so that the box may be opened up into the position shown in Fig. 6. The cover 13 and the front portion 12 are placed in the position shown in Fig. 6 and the sides 16 and 17 are placed at a slight angle to the back so that a display holder is produced having a back portion and slightly angular side portions which effectively set ofl the push-pins located on the inner box 24. The sight opening 40 referred to in the inner box 24 enables the shanks 41 of the push pins or other articles as well as the top portions 42 to be clearly visible. In this manner the whole of each article in the receptacle is made to appear and the contents of the box isfully displayed. The may beset upon thecounter or if desired it may be secured to the wall, the tuck 22, which is provided with a hole 43, forming aconvenlent means 'for hanging it up. Where the box is used as a display holder it is desirable to cover that part of the inside of the box which forms the back por- 'tion with suitable advertising matter and this may be readily accomplished before the blank is folded.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I am enabled to produce a very effective box for push-pins or the of material and which is therefore far less expensive to manufacture than boxes of this type as heretofore constructed so far as known to me.
What I claim is:
1. A receptacle for push pins or the like formed from a singleblank of sheet cardboard, said receptacle consisting of an outer box and an inner box adapted to be inclosed within said outer box, one portion.of said display holder like from a single piece I blank being folded to form the outer box and the remaining portion of said blank being folded to form the inner'box, the front portionv of said inner box being of less height than the front portion of said outer box, and having a longitudinal slot therein,
a portion of the front of said outer box being adapted to lie adjacent the front of said inner box, and a tongue on the front'portion of said outer box adapted to be received within the said slot to secure the said outer. box together and to space the said inner box from the cover of the said outer box.
2. A receptacle for push pins or the like formed from a single blank of sheet cardboard, said receptacle consisting of an outer box and an inner box adapted to ,be inclosed within said outer box and having a base member which forms a common bottom for both of said boxes, oneportion of said blank being folded to form the outer box and the remaining portion of said blank being folded to form the inner box, the front portion of said inner box being of less height than the front portion of said outer box and having a slot lengthwise thereof adjacent the bottom of said box, a portion of the front of said outer box being adapted to lie contiguous with the front of said inner box, and a tongue on the lower edge of said outer box adapted to be received within the said slot and rest on the said bottom to holdthe saidouter box together and to space the said inner box from the cover of said outer box.
3. A receptacle for push pins or the like formed from a single blank of sheet material, said receptacle consisting of an outer box and an inner box adapted to be inclosed within said outer box, and having a. base member which forms a common bottom for both of said boxes, one portion of said blank being folded to form the outer box and the remaining portion of said blank being folded to form the inner box, the front portion of said inner boxbeing of less height than the front portion of said outer box and having a longitudinal slot therein, a portion of the front of said outer box being adapted to lie adjacent .the front of said inner box, a tongue on the front portion of said outer box adapted to be received within the said slot, and a back portion on said outer box having'side members provided with segment shaped tucks adapted to be inserted within the side members of said inner box to enable the device to be used as a closed box or as a display holder.
I In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
PETER n. WARREN.
