Be it known that I, DAVID C. DANIEL, a
citizen'of the United States, residing at Raeford, in the county of Hoke. and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Churns, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in churns and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character wherein is comprised a working body, and it is an object of the invention to provide a churn with novel and improved means whereby the body may be readily and conveniently reciprocated in order to effect the churning operation.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved churn wherein the body, whenin applied position, is capable of yieldable movement independently of the operating means for reciprocating the same.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved churn whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features .of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a View partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a churn constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the retractile member for imparting independent upward movement to the upper cross head being shown ininoperative position; Fig. 2 isa sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 With the working body omitted; and Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line 3 of Fig. 1 with the working body omitted.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 represent uprights of predetermined dimensions and having their lower extremities provided with the supporti g feet 3, and the upper portion of the upright 1 is'b'referably circular in cross section, as
indicated at 4, for a purpose which will hereinafter be fully set forth.'
The'upper extremities of the uprights'll and 2 are connectedby the horizontal beam 5, while the lower end portions of the uprights 1 and 2 rotatably support the shaft 6 having one extremity provided with a balance wheel 7 and its opposite extremity with the pinion 8 in mesh with the driving gear 9 fixed to the stub shaft 10 rotatably supported by the upright 2 at a predetermined point intermediate the length of said upright. The stub shaft 10 as herein embodied, is extended beyond the drive gear 9 and has coacting therewith the hand crank 11, whereby the requisite rotation may be imparted to the gear 9 for rotatingthe shaft 6. While I have herein disclosed the shaft 10 as adapted to be manually operated, it will be understood that it can be driven in any manner desired.
Arranged inwardly of theupright 2 but in close proximity thereto, is the vertically disposed post 12 preferably circular in cross section and having its lower extremity provided with an eye-14f through which the shaft 6 is loosely directed and whereby said shaft serves as a support or mounting for the lower end portion of said post 12. The upper extremity of the post is operatively connected, as at 15, with the horizontal beam 5 hereinbefore referred to.
16 and 17 denote cross heads provided in their opposite extremities with the openings 18 through which the upright 1- and the post 12 are directed, said upright 1 and post 12 serving as guides for the heads '16 and 17' in their vertical movement. below the lower cross head 17 is an additional cross head 19 provided in its opposite extremities with the openings 20 through which the upright 1 and the post12 are also directed for the purpose of guiding said head 19 in its movement. Interposed be.- tween the cross heads 17 and 19-a re the expansible members 21 which permit a yielding movement of the cross head 17 independently of the cross head 19 and whereby the operation of my improved churn is materially facilitated.
The intermediate portion of the shaft 6 is preferably angular in cross section, as ind cated. at 22, in order to .afiix thereto the Positioned eccentric disk 23, although it is to be under: stood that the disk 23 may be fixed to the shaft 6 in any desired manner.
The disk 23 is provided with the oppositely directed peripheral flanges 24 provided wth the transversely alined recesses or notches 25, and underlying the flanges 2% are the inturned lips or extensions 26 of the yoke member 27 secured to and depending from the cross head 19 at substantially its longitudinal center. It will be self-evident that the recesses or notches hereinbefore referred to, readily permit the yoke 27 being operatively engaged with or removed from the flanges 24.
Rotatably supported within the yoke 27 is the anti-friction roller 28 with which the periphery of the disk 23 is adapted to contact to impart upwardmovement to the head 19 and the head 17 through the medium of the interposed expansible members 21 herein disclosed as conventional coil springs. The coaction of the inturned lips 26 with the flanges 2 1 assure a positive downward movement being imparted tothe head 19 through the medium of the disk 23. r
B denotes a churn body preferably cylindrical in form and produced of metal and having its upper end open, said open end being closed by the cover C preferably of wood. I also find it of advantage to provide the churn body B with a glass covered slot 29 whereby visual access may be had within the body and also to provide the body with the handle members H whereby the same may be conveniently manipulated. churn body is adapted to beseated upon the cross head 17 with the upper cross head 16 restingupon the cover C thereof.
The upper surface of the cross head 16 is provided adjacent its opposite ends with the transversely disposed rock shaft 30 having its opposite extremities provided with the upstanding rock arms 31 with which are pivotally engaged the extremities of the yokes 32 which strad'dlethe cross head 16 and have their lower extremities pivotally engaged with the upstanding bars 33 carried V by the lower cross head 17, whereby it will be perceived that upon imparting upward movement to the rock arms 31, the body B will be effectively held or clamped between the heads 16 and 17.
The intermediate portion of each of the rock shafts 30 is provided with the inwardly directed operating member 34: whereby the requisite movement maybe imparted to the coacting shaft 30, and it is to be noted that the contact of said operating member 34:
with the upper face of the cross head 16 serves to limit the movement of the shaft 30 in one direction or when adjusted to efiect the clamping action uponthe body B. It
will be self-evident that reverse movement of the shaft'30 will permit suflicient e1eva- The 7 tion of the head 16 to permit the removal of the body B from between the heads 16 and 17 and as herein disclosed, the upward movement of the head 17 is accomplished in an automatic manner through the medium of the retractile member 35 herein disclosed as a coil spring interposed between and operatively engaged with the cross beam 5 and the upper head 16 at substantially theirlom gitudinal centers.
It is preferred that the member 35 be permanently secured to the cross beam 5 but detachably engaged with the upper cross head 16 as it is my purpose to have the member 35 disengaged from the cross head 16 during the churning operation.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a churn constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim: 1
1. A churn comprising two vertical members, a shaft engaged with said vertical members, means for rotating the shaft, two cross heads slidably engaged with the vertical members, means carried by said vertical members for clamping a churn body therebetween, a third cross head slidably engaged with the vertical members and positioned intermediate the first named cross heads and the shaft, an expansible member interposed between the third cross head and the lower of the first named cross heads, and coacting means carried by the shaft and the third cross head for reciprocating the cross heads upon rotation of the shaft.
