To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. THOMA- soN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ellerslie, in the county of Harris and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hoes, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in hoes, .and particularly to the attaching device for holding the blade and sleeve on the handle of the hoe.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a simple device which is easily and quickly attached to hoes of usual or standard construction, for the purpose of rigidly securing the blade to the handle of the hoe, and to prevent loosening of the sleeve and displacement of the blade. 7

The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter be more fully pointed out and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view partly in section showing the head of the hoe and my attaching device illustrated in connection therewith. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the attachment.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, as illustrated in the drawings, I have utilized a standard hoe to exemplify my invention, the usual blade 1, handle 2 and sleeve 3 being illustrated, and the only change or alteration in these parts for the attachment of my device might be flattening the top surface of the handle .a little in order to accommodate the attachment which I have indicated by the numeral 4.

The attachment comprises two parallel metallic straps 5 and 6, the former being much longer than the latter, and the strap 5 is perforated at 7 and 7, and strap 6 is perforated at 8 in alinement with the perforation 7. The metal of which the attach- Specification of Letters Patent.

ment is made is bent as at 9, and a forked end 10 is provided with angular-1y located prongs 11. The attachment may be made up of two separate pieces welded together, or it may be fashioned in any other suitable manner.

The mode of attaching the device to the hoe is apparent. If the upper face of the hoe handle is slightly flattened, the strap 5 may be pushed from the front between the sleeve 3 and the handle, with the strap 6 over the top of the sleeve 3. When the points of the prongs 11 have encountered the end of the handle, a hammer is used and by repeated blows the prongs 11 are driven into the material of the handle 2, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.

By means of two fastening devices such as wire nails 12, the straps are secured to the handle. The strap 5 is secured by a nail passing through the perforation 7, and the end of the nail is hammered flat against the underside of the hoe or handle, and strap 6 is attached by another nail 12 which passes through both perforations S and 7, and then the pointed end of the nail which projects through the handle is bent over at 13. In this manner the sleeve is rigidly fastened to the handle, and the straps are rigidly held by the nails 12, while the prongs 11 also serve as retaining means. The sleeve and blade of the hoe are fixed so that they not only cannot slide off of the handle, but they cannot rotate on the handle, but are held with perfect rigidity. The bent end of strap 6 prevents any movement of the sleeve 3 and, of course, the bent ends of the nails prevent dislodgment of the nails.

From the above description taken in connection with my drawings it is apparent that I have provided a device which fulfils the purpose of a comparatively perfect attachment of this character, which holds the blade rigidly to the handle, and which is durable, comparatively cheap in first cost, and very simple in construction and assembly.

Vhat I claim is:

1. The combination with a hoe handle, a blade, and the sleeve on the handle, of a retaining device comprising parallel perforated straps one of which is passed between the sleeve and handle, and the other one over the sleeve, and fastening means in the ing a head with bent prongs driven into the end of the handle and a pair of perforated straps, one of which is passed under the sleeve, and the other one over the sleeve, and nails driven through said straps and 10 handle and clenched at the underside of the handle.
