BINDER Forv LOOSE-LEAF LEDGERsQf T all whom it may concern: l
Beit known that I, FOREST H. MONTGOM- ERY, a citizen-.of the United States, residing 'at East Orange, county of Essex, and yState of New Jersey, haveinvented lcertain new and useful' Improvements in Binders for llO . 'in a vertical ling case or drawer and adapthesive tabs for the securement of leaves or Loose-Leaf Ledgers, of which the'following. is a specication. -I .This invention relates leafledgers. y p
The present invention relates tothat general class of binder employing gummed tabs to which leaves'or sheets may be adhesively secured, and it has for dits object, first, the provision of a continuous binder strip of paper or textile material having gummed parts which can bepartially severed to pro? duce tabs to.4 which leaves or sheets may be adhesively secured, without disturbing the remaining portion of the continuous binder; second, more particularly, a continuous gummed binder, strip havingl successive lines of perforations which outline tabs that may be partially severed to freely project for the adhesive attachment of sheets vor leaves, without disturbing the remaining portion of the strip; third, .a backing or cover provided with 'a continuous lstrip having/partially severable gummedpcrtions whichdene ad-v tol binders for nloosen sheets to the backing. l
Further objects of theiinvention` are the provision of a file or binder ofim'proved construction having, rst, an'overlying' flap designed to provide a straight ling edge and to prevent gapingof ther-file when it is ed to bear indicia relating'to the file and to serve as a protection of a current sheet which is temporarily inserted under thefl'ap; and
y, still further, an improved notched or recessed edge construction, whereby the `ile A `may be readily opened.
The present invention is designed for use as a binder for letters, duplicate bills, record sheets, or leaves of any nature whatsoeverand toconveniently hold the sheets or leaves successively accumulated so that they iaf, be
bof
turned over like the pagesof a book. llt is, however, particularly designed and adapted for use as a binderffor loose leaf ledger sheets and ysimilarpapers wherein'the variv ous leaves or' sheets may be secured, one at l a time, to constitute a'perm'anent and up-todate recordof -an individual account. l
lltis a common practice at the-,present Specification of Letters lfatent. Patented Fab., 23, 1915, pplication filed May 7, 1,914. Serial No. 836,967. A
timein business', mercantile and other establishments, to make `out monthly statements or bills arranged sol that a carbon impression of the billor statement is transferred to a second sheet which forms the ledger. At
stated times the bill is detached from the dur plicate sheet containing the carbon impres- Sion and-the original sentto the-customer,
Jwith other duplicate sheetsof other accounts, it is impracticable to vkeep the successive statements of any particular account in segregated arrangementf- The present invention provides a binder 'l for loose leaf ledger sheets or any similar record sheets,\whereby the itemized monthly or periodic statements of'a given account may be accumulated. as successive leaves in a single file or binder and thus, ior any desired period, all items of the given account vmay be readily accessible, the leaves or` sheets being held by the gummed'tabs so that they may be readily-turned over as are the pages of. a book. The 'file orcover may be provided with suitable columns to show-monthly balances, credits, and other desired data.
The continuous gummed -strip ofthe pres- -ent invention is ade separately and one portion pasted to the file or backing, en-
tailing slight expense of production. The
continuous gummed strip may be provided lwith perforations or any markings to indicate the division lines for the partial severance of thetabs, and as the tabs are only released as needed, the remaining portion vof the strip being continuous, there are noloose projecting parts to become bent, creased, rullled 'or damaged; Preferably',l
a notch, or indicator of some character is provided at the center ofthe lengthof thel strip to define A'where the rst tab 'of the" lower p'art of the strip is to be partially'- severed in order that the tabs may be 'successively released an even and regular 'mannen two :torY each sheet orleaf, as successive leaves are attached to the tabs, Where.- by the tabs for securing successive leaves or sheets 'are offset from each other instead of being bunched. .In consequence, the file is maintained of substantially the saine thickness' throughout its extent. The tabs are so gummed that they are adapted to be applied .to vthe under side of the sheets' or leaves and thus leave the faces ofthe sheets un-` j obstructed.
I am aware that modifications could be resorted to in vcarrying out the' invention,
among which may be mentioned the omission ofthe perforations and the substitution therefor ofprinted lines, marks or indicia to indicate where the continuousguinmedstrip should be clipped or cut'to release the tabs and I do not, therefore, limit myself to the precise disclosures of the drawings, except where specified in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a 'front view of the complete binder; Fig.
2, a similar view of a duplicate bill or statement sheet `which may be used in connection with the present invention; Fig. 3, a view looking at the inside of the binder when the latter is laid out flat; Fig. 4:, a view like Fig. 1 with the top flap thrown back; Fig'. 5,' `a view looking toward the interior of the binder with 'the-first ledger sheet secured by two of the tabs; `and Fig. 6, an'enlarged vseetionen line A--B of Fig.^5,- the parts being 'shown spread to better illustrate the con struction. `yThe fileor binder consists of a single sheet' fof Manila or other suitablepaper composed of the back 1 thefront-3 andthe Ifoldable fla-p 2 which is adaptedA to fold -alon'g the lineover the front '3, as shown in Fig. -1,
40' to. therebyI vcloseJ the upper' or` ilingedge bf the binder and provide 'a vstraight 'iiling edge and prevent gaping or eparationfof the back l and front 3, besides enabling thebinder te be readily inserted tin .or removed from a vertical filing case wherea numberA of the binders will be classified for read reference. The'la 2 may be providedwi- .the file 'numbent e name, or both, 'of `person .runningthe account, or, with -other i suitable data-referringto the bindenaccording to the papers it contains. The front' is referablyprovided with dates and columns I account may be ascertained.
romv whilr the general l'conditioi'i of the Referring to Figs. v3 and 5, 5 re` 'i'esents a 'continuons stripiof guminedpa r 'or linen extending. substantially the length of I the binder' and provided with 'transversely 69. widtho arranged linesof'perforabimis 5%'. One entire side, as 5b is gummed. A portion' 5of thel the strip 5 moistened and appliedv to theback 1 and the line of folding 5d of the remainin 'portion of'the'strip coin-J eident with t line of folding-of the front 3 .onltheback l. Thestrip 5, 5?, may,in-the A process ofmanufactur'e, be made in one 'conpears on thel sheett'. When` the bill is to tinuous length and severed into strips of a v suitable length to be pasted in to the binder,
and as the 'parts 5, 5c are duplicates, no particular manipulation ofthe strip is requiredl when pasting it Vto the back 1. If, however, A it is desired th omit the perforations in the part 5, this maybe' done. Instead of the perforations 5, lines might -be printed ,on the strip .or notches made in the edge thereof, or anysuitable ,marks provided to indicate where the strip should b e cut or partially severed transversely to define the tabs 6 (Figs. 5 and 6). The continuous strip 5 is free, as'sliown in Fig. 6, and the tabs 6 may lbe `readily freed by partial severance, and thenpasted to the lower side of the duplicate ledger sheet 4, whereby the latter is hinged or bound vas is the leaf ofa book. Preferably, a notch 7 is provided'intermediate` the ends of the strip 5 as a guide to indicate which tab iof those of' the lower j par-t Iof said strip should be first severed. Preferably, two tabs will be partially severed ,to form the joint o 'r hinge foreach 'sheet 4. As successive sheets are applied to 90 the binder, the tabs 6316"; 6, 6d will be y released, etc., so ,that each sheet 4 is separately'connected toA the .strip 5 by its own pair of hinging tabs.
Fig. Qillustrates a common form of duplicate loose leaf ledger sheet, wherein Liis the duplicate sheet, et .the priginal and 4" the carbon .sheet interposed between e and- 4.". The items are written or typewritten on thevv sheet 4 and the carbon impression apsent out, the original sheet 4 is detached and the duplicate sheet 4 is applied tothe binderv and subsequent statements are applied over on top of the first, the entire account being thus kept up to date and all the sheets in a single binder for a given account.
Referring to Figs'. .1 and 3, there is pI'O- 'vided the edge of the'fnont 3, a-nger notch 3a which permitsthe thumb" of the 112 right-hand to 'immediatelyy grasp the ede of theback 1 while the fingers of the le hand Agrasp-J the front 8, thus obviatin finge g of the binder when it is desine to fit1-Q.
The strip 5 may be provided as a single continuous gummed strip without the perforations, 55, and devoid evenof lines, notches, or other Jindicia to indicate where the strip Ashould be cut transversely to form tabs. v In using thisforni of the invention, a pair of scissors may be usedto cut the strip 5 to form leaf-attaching tabs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as4 new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: 41.
