COMBINATION BASE AND COUNTER FLASHING.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. (lalrrrrns,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combination Base and Counter Flash ing, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a flashing i1(lll")ll6(l tobe employed in covering the joint etween a roof, floor or the like and an upstanding side Wall. The invention aims to provide novel means whereby the base flashing and the counter flashing are held together, and to provide novel means whereby these elements may be mounted upon the upright wall.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description procoeds, the invention resides in the combinetion and arrangement of parts and in the details of'construetion hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that chan es in the precise en'ibodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.
In the accompanying drawing. Figure 1 shows in front elevation, a portion of the counter flashing in a partially finished condition; Fig. 2 is a fragniental longitudinal section of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the counter flashing partially completed; Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the counter llasl'iing -und the base flashing 111 connected relation;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view depicting the flashings in operative relation to the upright wall and the roof or flooring; Fig. (l is a frag mental sectional detail illustrating a modified means for connecting the base flashing with the roof.
The present invention embodies a counter lashing adapted to be assembled with an upright wall, and a base flashing connected overlie or to be connected with the roofing.
The counter flashing preferably is fashioned from a plate of metal indicated by the reference character 1. Projections are Specification of Letters Patent.

formed upon the plate 1 and in forming these projmrlions .holes 2 preferably are punched in the plate so as to form burs 3. Along its upper cdge thc plate 1 is bent over as shown at -'l to Form a reinforcing flange 5. The plate is then rcversoly bent along longitudinal lines as indicated at (S in Fig. 3 so as to form a main or upper wing T, an auxiliary or lower wing 8 and a holding loop 9 connecting the wings. When the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 3, certain 01 the burs 3 will project toward others of the burs. as will he understood readily.
The base flashing is in the form of a flexible strip. Any desired n'iatcrial may be employed in the fashioning ol' the base liasln ing 10, a strip of strong canvas or other textile material being satisfactory. The upper edge of the base flashing 10 is introduced between the holding loop l) and the auxiliary wing 8 and the loop is flattened down, so that the burs 3 engage opposed faces of the base flashing 10. The structure is now ready to be applied.
The u ju'ight wall may consist of brfizlis or blocks of masonry or any other material indicated at 11, the mortar being indicated at 12.
The rooting is indicated at 17 and is car ried upwardly against the upright wall, 11.
In order to assemble the structure forming the subject matter of this invention with the upright wall, nails 14 or like securing elements are passed through the lower or :iuxil' iary wing 8 and enter the mortar 19.. The
'pliable base flashing 10 is lifted before the insertion ol the securing elements i l and after the securing elements ha \'c been placed, the base flashing is turned down so as to cover the outer ends of the securing elements. The upper portion of the base flashing 10 is cemented as indicated at 19 to the other face of the lower or auxiliary wing 8. The lower edge of the base flashing 10 may overlap the upper edge of the roofing 17, as shown in Fig. 5, or it may be embedded in the roofing,
as shown at 18 in Fig. (3. The base flashing is treated with water proof material of some sort, and any suitable roofing material may be employed, if desired. i
It is to be observed that owing to the presence of the holding loop 9, the upper ormain wing 7 is spaced apart from the wall 11 to define a groove 15 in which may be placed form cooperating parts including an The upper edge of the Wing 7 may he hel in place by flashing books 50-.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the class'described, a
counter flashing comprising a plate reversely' bent upon itself to form arhain wing and to auxiliary Win and a holding loop connecting the Wings, the auxiliary Wing being extended below the loop; a securing element passing through the auxiliary Wing below the loop; and a base flashing pinched between the loop and the auxiliary Wing, the base flashing heing foldahle across the loop to permit the insertion of the securing element, one of said cooperating. parts having a projection engaging the base flashing.
2. in a device of the class described, a counter flashing comprising a plate reversely bent upon itself to form main and auxiliary Wings and av holding loop connecting the Wings the'loop serving to space the Wings transversely to define a cement receiving recess tothe rear of-the-main Wing, and a base flashing engaged between the loop and the auxiliary wing.
Tin testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my own,v IE have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
