Description

JOHN H. W. YonNornnNDEnsoN, TEXASI" Letters Patent No. 110,531, dated December 27, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-CULTIVATORS, SCRAPERS, AND CHQPPERS.
Th; Bchedle referred to in these Lettere Patent and making part of the same.
To all -whom it may concern Be it known that 1', JOHN H. W. YOUNG, of Henderson,'in the county O f Russ and State of Texas, have invented a new and improved Cotton-Cultivator, Scraper, and Chopper; and I do hereby de- 'elare that the following is a full, clear, and exact dethe under side of the maconnection of the axle with the sliding boxes;
Figure o is a detached perspective View showing the adjustable shanks ofthe Scrapers; and
ifigu. 5 i is a side View of the machine. "i'his invention relatesto certain improvements inv a niachinefor-cuitivating, scraping, and chopping cotton, all at one operation seid improvements.conststing?r particularly in Shanks for the Scrapers pivoted :it their upper'cnds to the frame, and provided with curved slots, through which pass clamp-bolts, the object of this arrnngeiuenr. being to enable the scrapcrs io he set at diiferent angles in a vertical piane, accordingr to the nature ot' the soil through which they run; and in handles for guiding the machine, which are pivoted at their ii'ont ends to fixed standards, and centrally to sliding blocks in which the axle has its bearings, the same being`provided`with a spring lock-bar for engaging in rack-posts o'r standground may be regulated with convenience and dis pui' , "ig to the drawing;y
A is the frainc of the machine.
n are vertical boxes attached, exactly opposite each other, to the frame A, and insh with the inner sides of the same, said boxes having vertical slots at their inncrsides.
ii is the axle, which passesthrough the vertical slotsin the boxes a., and terminates at euch end in vertical blocks b ineiosed wthin the boxes, and jointed at their upper ends to the handles c, by means of which the frame A may he raised 0r lowered ou the blocks l), the handles being pivoted at their front cxtreniitics 'to standards d that spring from the frame A.
lo secure thel handles at anydesired height, at
front end, the Scrapers f at its rear end, and the rotary choppers g behind the Scrapers. lhese are all raised or lowered with'the frame, for the purpose of" front oi' a master-wheel, so that a track or 'furrow may be cleared for the latter to run in.
"ihe plows e run oneV at each side of arow of plants, and throw earth 'away therefromso as to completely cover the spaces'between the rows vwith turned-up soil, and thus bury and kill the weeds therein.
'Ii-ie Scrapers f follow, and pare off the sides ot the row, reducing it to the requisite width.
The rotary hoes g complete the operation by chopping across the row, and dividing it into stands of the desired length.
One of the hoes is. made narrower than the rest, the difference.betwenits width and that of the other hoes being the ieenm'of the hill tlietthis hoe leaves standing erosswise oi' the row.
All the hoes cut mt 'clean spaces in the row between the hills.
Instead ot' one narrow hoe, two or three might be used, in which ease the hills would be proportionately nearer together.
A slot, vli., is formed crosswise ofthe hoes,`to perf mit iheiradj ustmeut bymeaus of bolts or screw-s passing 'through the ends of the arms-c' c'.
The shaft D of the; rotary choppers is connected 'at its front end with the axle B, and its box k, on
the rear cross-piece of theframe A, is provided with trunnions, by means of which the rear end ofthe.
shaft is enabled to rise or fail with the frame without binding or straining the latter.
The shauks l o`i` the scrapersf are pivoted at their upper ends to the rear cross-piece of the franie A, and are each provided with a circular slot, in, in rear ...of' the pivot, throngh;which s lot a set-screw passes,
be turned s o as to vary-tbe inclination of the scrap-- ers-to the row, as in clay soils the Scrapers need to be set at a sharper angle te the iineof. draft than in s indy or loose soils,
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letterslatent, is I l1. The combination?, with the frame A and'vthe axle v B, ofthe blocks lb b, handles c c, rack-posts p11, lockbar @and springs s e, substantially as and-for the purpose specified.
A-2. The scraper-shank, when pivotd to the frame,
and provided with a curved slot and set-screw, for, the
purpose of enabling the Scrapers to beplaced at any desired inclination to :theline of draft.
