Description

P. WITZEL.
AUTOPLANB.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 1, 1913.
Patented 801113.23, 1913.
PAUL WITZEL, OF BERLIN-WEISSENSEE, GERMANY.
AUTOPLANE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 1913.
Application filed May 1, 1913. Serial No. 764,934.
To all whom it may concern it known that I, PAUL l/VrrznL, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Berlin-lVeissensee, Germany, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Autoplanes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved autoplane, which is so constructed that it can be used on the ground, as well as in the air or on the water.
The improved autoplane is represented on the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of the same, while Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are diagrammatical sections on the lines A-B, C D and EF of Fig. 1 respectively.
The autoplane is mounted on a portable truck a, by means of which it can be run on the ground. To raise the apparatus, four lateral height-wings, two on each side, are provided, by which the autoplane can be lifted directly from the place, where it stands, without necessitating for this purpose a starting plane like other apparatus. The height-wings b are coupled with the main-shaft of the apparatus by chain-gearings and adapted to turn on the right hand side to the right and on the left hand side to the left (see arrows, Fig. 4:), whereby they suck-oi]? the air beneath the d aft planes and thus lift the autoplane. Upon the latter having reached the desired height, the front propeller 0 and the two rear propellers c, j are switched-on, and the autoplane is moved forward.
At the head of the autoplanc, a windcatcher g and a height steering device it are arranged, while at the tail two stabilization-planes i and the side steering device (Z are provided. A compressed-air motor is is mounted behind the front propeller. lVith the motor shaft Z, the height-wings Z), as mentioned, and the rear propellers c, are coupled. Beside the passengers room n, an oil-container 0 is provided for an automatic lubrication of all bearings. The stabilization-planes i are operated from p with the aid of levers, so as to keep the autoplane in balance.
A gas-reservoir r is mounted in the autoplane, for assisting in carrying the same.
a' are adjustable water-runners, which, when lowered, permit 01 the apparatus being used as a hydroplane.
I claim:
In an autoplane, in combination, a portable truck to carry the same on the ground, a wind-catcher and a height steering device at the front of the autoplane, a front propeller behind the latter, adjustable stabilization-planes, two rear propellers and a side steering device all arranged at the tail of the autoplane, a motor behind the front propeller having a 1llZLl1lSllt1ft coupled with said propellers, four laterally arranged height wings coupled with said shaft, :1 gas-reservoir to assist in carrying the autoplane in. the air, and adjustable runners adapted, when lowered, to use the apparatus as a hydroplane, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence oi? two subscribing witnesses.
PAUL VVITZEL. Witnesses GUSTAV Scnwanz, Brennan HAnnnnoRN.
