JAMES SCOTT. MIL-LER ANI) WALTER MILLER, 0F BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
DETACHBLE C'U'FF FOR TROUSERS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES SCOTT MTL- LER and WALTER MILLER, residents of Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Cus for Trousers, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact descriptiomreference being,
had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation partially in section of the bottom of the leg of a pair of trousers, showing one form of my improved culf attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the culi' shown in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a cuH in which I have shown a modified form of an attaching device.
This invention relates to cuffs for trousers, and is designed to provide a cuff of this character which can readily be attached to and detached from the bottom of the leg of a pair of trousers having the regular cut, and which will give them the appearance of trousers having properly shaped cuffs formed integrally therewith.
lOur invention comprises a continuous cuff for trousers which is fastened to the trousers leg by means extending to the inside of said trousers leg; it being understood, however, that changes may be made in the details of construction of the cuffs as well as the devices for attaching the cuff to the trousers, without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention as defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings referring to the form of Figs. l and 2, in which we show one form of our invention the numeral 2 designates the leg of a pair of trousers which have been properly shaped at the bottom to be worn without a cui The continuous cui is made of the same material from which the trousers are made and is provided with an outer fold 3 and an inner fold 4 which is turned upwardly at the bottom 5, thereby forming a space between these folds which is arranged to receive the bottom of the leg 2. The inner face of the leg 2 is'provided with a series of eyes 6 which are arranged to be engaged by hooks 7 connected to the inner face of the inner fold 4 of the cuff.
In Fig. 3 we have shown a cuff similar to that shown in Figs. l and 2, but which is provided with tapes or webs `8 attached to the inner face of the fold 4. These tapes Specification of Letters Patent.

are provided with hooks 7EL at the upper ends which are arranged to engage eyes secured to the inside of the bottom of the leg of the trousers.
We are aware that it is old to provide trousers with cuffs which have been formed integrally therewith, and which have be'en properly shaped to prevent wrinkling of the trousers at the upper end'of the cuff. The disadvantage of this arrangement, and particularly in ready made clothing, arises when the trousers have to be shortened to suit the wearer. As the leg of the trousers is cut on a taper it involves considerable work to shorten the leg and at the same time properly shape the cuit and the bottom of the leg to prevent wrinkling. We are alsov aware that trousers have been made in which the bottom of the leg is turned up' to form the cuff, and when the wearer desires-to use them without the cuff, they are turned back to the initial position. This arrangement is very unsatisfactory, as the bottom of the leg is considerably smaller in diameter than a point several inches above the bottom to which the bottom is brought when it is turned upwardly to form the cuffs and when the bottom is turned upwardly, it will naturally wrinkle the leg of the trousers at the top of the cuff.
The advantages of our invention result from the provision of a cuff which can be properly cut and shaped from its own pattern, and which can readily be attached to and detached from the bottom of the leg of a pair of trousers which have been properly shaped. Another advantage results from the provision of a cul which is properly shaped to fit the bottom ofvv the,v leg, and-if the trousers must be shortened to suit the wearer, the bottoms can be readily busheled to properly fit the cuff, and therefore the wearer will obtain a pair of trousers in which the bottoms of the legs have been properly shaped, even though they have been shortened. A further advantage is.
that the cuff, when worn, acts as a protection or guard for the edge of thel trousers legs and prevents it from wearing or becoming soiled.
We do not limit ourselves to the employment of hooks and eyes as the fastening or attaching means for the cufl", since any convenient form of fastening devices may be employed.' The cuff may also be varied in size, shape, &.c., without departing from our invention. llt may also be ci single thickness 'or foldedback es shown. lt will also be understood by those familier with the art, that our invention een be success fully used in connection with the sleeves of coats.
We claim:
l. A continuous cuit1 for trousers or tbe like, having :fastening devices arranged to a space between tbe itolds arranged to receive the bottom of e leg of e pair of trousers, and fastening devices connected to the inside of tlie inner :told arranged to engage coperating fastening devices on the inside of the leg; substantially e," described.
lln testimony whereof, We lieve hereunto set our blends.
