Description

.11. J. SAUM. EXPANDINGMANDREL.
APPLIATION'I'ILED APB.. 10, 1911.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT J. SAUM, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE WESTERN TOOL AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
EXPANDING MANDREL.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. SAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expanding Mandrels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to expanding mandrels and the object of the same is to provide a mandrel which will be self-locking and self-releasing; which will have a wide range of expansion; and which will be simple in construction and of a strong, durable character.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a mandrel embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a transverse, sectional view, taken on the line m of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
In these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of the invention and have shown the same as comprising a body portion or mandrel proper 1 having mounted thereon, preferably at onev end thereof, a-
sleeve 2 of less diameter than and adapted to extend into the hub of the device which is to be secured to the mandrel. The sleeve 2 is secured to the body portion or mandrel proper in such a manner as to hold t-he same normally against movement relatively thereto, but to permit it to be rotated relatively to said body portion, as by means of a Spanner engaging the openings 2a. To this end the body portion is here shown as provided with a screw-threaded portion 3 and the adjacent end of the sleeve is also provided with a screw-thread t to engage the screw-thread of the body portion. The sleeve is provided with a circumferentially arranged series of openings or slots 5 extending longitudinally thereof and adapted to receive gripping devices, which, in the present instance, consist of elongated rollers 6. The side walls of each slot preferably converge outwardly and the width of the outer portion of the slot is slightly less t-han 'the diameter of the respective roller. In this manner the outward movement of the roller is checked when approximately one-half of its diameter extends beyond the surface of the sleeve 2 and, at the Specification of Letters Patent.

same time, the roller is free at all times to rotate about its longitudinal axis. The body portion of the mandrel is provided with suitable means for moving the gripping devices G into locking engagement with the interior surface of the hub. In the present instance that portion of the mandrel which extends into the sleeve is provided with a circumferent-ially arranged series of cam surfaces 7 corresponding in number with the gripping devices or rollers 6. These cam surfaces are formed by cutting away or recessing the surface of the mandrel. The greatest depth of each recess is such that when this portion thereof is brought opposite the respective roller 6, this roller will enter the recess and the outer surface thereof will not extend beyond the outer surface of the sleeve. The rotation of the sleeve relatively to the mandrel will cause the rollers 6 to ride up the cam surfaces of the mandrel and to be moved outward through their slots until they engage the inner surface of the hub. The mandrel rotates in a direction to cause the cam surfaces to engage the rollers and this rotation will serve to force the rollers tightly into engagement with the hub and to lock the same in this position. When it is desired to remove the hub from the mandrel a slight rotation of the mandrel in the opposite direction will move the cam surfaces away from the rollers and these will automatically drop into the recesses at the bases of the cam surfaces, thus automatically releasing the hub and permitting the mandrel to be withdrawn.
The gripping devices will act just as effectually upon the hub -when they extend a slight distance beyond the surface of the sleeve as they will when they are moved outward to their full extent. Consequently, the device has a wide range of expansion and can be utilized with hubs of dierent diameters.
It will be apparent that I have provided a self-locking and self-releasing mandrel which is of a very simple construction and can be made very strong and durable.
I wish it to be understood that I ldo not desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettereI Patent, is
1. A device of the character, described comprising a sleeve having a series of longitudinal slots, a radially movable gripping member rotatably mounted in each of said Slots and held against lateral displacement, and a. device rotatably mounted in said sleeve and having a series ot' cam surfaces arranged to engage the respective gripping members.
2. A device of the character described comprising a sleeve having a series of longitudinal slots, a radially movable gripping member rotatablyT mounted in each ot' said slots and held against lateral displacement., and a mandrel extending into said sleeve, having rotary movement relatively thereto and provided With a series of cam surfaces adapt-ed to engage the respective gripping members.
3. A device of the character described comprising a mandrel provided with a circumi'erential series of cam surfaces and having a. screw-threaded portion, a sleeve eX- tending about that portion of said mandrel having said cam Surfaces, having one end screw-thr'eaded to engage the screw-threaded portion of said mandrel and provided with a series ot' longitudinal Slots, and an outwardly movable roller mounted in each of said slots and adapted to be actuated by the respective cam Surface of said mandrel.
4L. A device of the character deSeribcd comprising a mandrel, a Sleeve extending about a portion of Said mandrel, capable of rotary movement relatively thereto and having a circumferential series of openings therein, gripping devices mounted in said sleeve and adapted to extend through the respective openings, and means carried by said mandrel within said sleeve for moving said gripping devices outward at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis of the mandrel.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
