ROBERT N. CARSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
GLOVE-SEAM-PROTECTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 18, 1910.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911.
Serial No. 572,442.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT N. CARSON, citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Glove-Seam-Protecting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for protecting the seams ofgloves, gauntlets and mittens, so as to prevent the thread of the seam being cut and ripped by rough usage.
My invention consists of the improved glove seam-protecting device which I will hereinafter describe and claim and more fully explain by reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows the preferred form of the device. Figs. 2 and 3 show modifications.
In order to protect the seams, which are made of buckskin, leather, or equivalent ma terial, from danger of ripping or wearing out by rough usage, I employ a supplemental protective strip A. This strip is folded, and both edges are stitched through the seam which is to be protected, as shown at 2, leaving a tubular portion 3, caused by the fold of the strip. This tubular portion is of such size that it may be brought over the preliminary line of stitching so as to be substantially central thereof. I then stitch this strip through the center, as shown at 4, the line of stitching corresponding approxi mately with the first line, and when the tube has been thus stitched it is divided into two duplex or bellows or tubular-like structures which may contain air and are elastic. These tubes project upon each side, and thoroughly cover and protect the original seam, and by reason of the inward fold caused by the line of stitching it, the tubular sides will be higher than this line of stitching, which will thus be also protected from injury.
Fig. 2 shows the main stitch 2 as covered by a strip A stitched at 5 and folded over and again stitched through at 6, then folded over the stitch 6 and stitched at 7 through the tube to form a four-ply reinforce.
Fig. 3 shows the main stitch 2 covered by a strip A which is stitched at 88, along each edge, and then double folded over one stitch 8 and sewed at 9.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is-
1. A protecting device for the seams of gloves and like articles, said device including a strip having itstwo edges stitched contiguous to the seam to be protected, and having an intermediate portion stitched parallel with the edges, the parts of the strip between the intermediate and edge stitching being fashioned to form duplex pneumatic bellows-like tubes, which overlap the seam to be protected.
2. A protecting device for the seams of gloves and like articles said device including a. strip having its two edges stitched with the seam to be protected and having a portion intermediate of the edges stitched parallel with the stitching at the edges whereby a bellows-like tube is formed between the second named stitching and each of the first named stitching, said tube overlapping the seam to be protected.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT N. CARSON. WVitnesses:
