WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1911.
Application filed May 28, 1910. Serial No. 563,856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn EGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches,'of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to wrenches in which the locking of the adjustable jaw is effected by a device which engages the shank of the wrench, and it is the object of the invention to provide an improved locking device which is simple in structure and highly efiicient in operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the kind stated, in which, the strain on the adjustable jaw, when the wrench is in use, acts to increase the grip of the locking device on the shank.
The invention also has for its object to provide a locking device which can be read ily released to permit a quick adjustment of the jaw.
WVith these objects in view, the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, and Fig. 2 a front elevation.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 5 denotes the shank of the wrench, having at one end a handle 6, and at the other end a fixed jaw 7 On the shank is slidably mounted the adjustable aw 8 of the wrench. Between. this jaw and the handle of the Wrench, a sliding sleeve 9 embraces the shank. That portion of the sleeve which is adjacent to the front edge of the shank is divided, and between the two ends of the sleeve is pivoted a cam shaped disk 10, by means of a pin 11 passing througl'i said parts. This cam disk is so positioned that its edge may come into contact with the front edge of the shank.
The cam disk is connected to the jaw 8 so that the strain on said jaw, when the wrench is in use, will tend to swing the cam disk into locking position. This connection comprises a link 12 pivoted at one of its ends to the jaw 8, the under side of the latter having a recess 13 to receive said end of the link. A pin 14 passing through the parts pivotally secures the link to the jaw. The
other end of the link is forked and straddles an arm 15 projecting from the cam disk, a pin 16 passing through the branches of the fork and the arm whereby a pivotal connection between the link and the arm is had.
At 17 is indicated a flat spring which is secured at one end to the edge of the cam disk, and has its free end in engagement with the front edge of the shank 5. This spring tends to swing the cam disk in a direction to lock the sleeve 9.
By the herein described connection between the cam disk and. the movable jaw, the greater the strain on said jaw when the wrench is in use, the greater will be the binding action of the cam disk on the edge of the shank, by reason of which the jaw will be securely held in adjusted position. The strain on the jaw tending to move the same away from the work is transmitted by the link 12 to the cam lever, so that the slightest movement of the jaw in this direction at once jams the cam disk tighter against the edge of the shank.
A wrench constructed as herein described is strong and durable, and the locking device is simple and can be readily placed in release position to permit adjustment of the movable jaw, and after the adjustment is made. the jaw will be securely locked.
I claim:
1. In a wrench, a shank having a fixed and a sliding jaw, a sleeve embracing the shank and slidable thereon, a pivoted cam disk carried by the sleeve in a position to engage the edge of the shank, an arm projecting from the cam disk, and a link connecting said arm to the movable jaw.
2. In a wrench, a shank having a fixed and a sliding jaw, a sliding sleeve embracing the shank, a pivoted cam disk carried by the sleeve in a position to engage the edge of the shank, a spring connected to the cam disk for swinging the same in a direction to bind against the edge of the shank, and a connection between the cam disk and the sliding jaw.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH EGAN.
