SIFTER OR THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANDREW I-IoLM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sifters or t-he Like, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that class of devices known as sifters or the like, and relates particularly to an ash sifter, and has among its objects the production of a simple, efficient, convenient and satisfactory device of the kind described that can be manufactured for comparatively small cost and 'i used wherever found applicable.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings in which my preferred form of device is shown as applied to an ash sifter, Figure 1 is a sectional view of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which the preferred form of my device is shown, 1 is a cabinet or housing, provided with an opening on one side with suitable doors or the equivalent for closing the opening. Two doors, 2 and 3, are shown, one being preferably hinged to the case on a horizontal axis, while the other door is secured to the case on a vertical axis. The case or cabinet may be made in any preferred form and of any suitable material, and the opening may be made as desired, or there may be a plurality of openings and doors therefor. A suitable member 5 is also provided and arranged to limit the movement of the door 2 and retain the same substantially as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Within the case or housing there is arranged what may be termed a receptacle support or carrier 6, which is supported in any suitable way, preferably so that it is rotatable. As shown, pins or extensions 9 and 10 on the carrier 6 fit into suitable recesses in the members 7 and 8 on the inside of the case. The receptacle 11 may be of any suitable form or material, and since it is removable from the carrier may be the ash pan from a stove or heater. A suitable sieve member 12 is arranged on the carrier,

the same being adjustably secured thereto by means of suitable members 13 and 14, member 16 and screws or the equivalent. As shown, the members 14 are slotted and cooperate with suitable thumb nuts 15 or their equivalent for the purpose so that the cover or sieve 12 may be retained in position on the receptacle. The sieve 12 may be of any suitable material. As shown it is made of wire arranged on a suitable frame. The receptacle 11 when made removable from the carrier, as shown, is retained thereon by means of stops 17, the sieve member 12 and the members 13 and 14 and thumb nuts 15. As shown, the carrier rotates substantially about a transverse or horizontal axis. Any suitable means may be employed for rotating the carrier 6 and with it the receptacle 11 and sieve 12, a very satisfactory arrangement being shown in which the end of the pin or extension 9 on the carrier is squared as shown at 18. The carrier may be rotated by means of a crank 19 or its equivalent, engaging the squared end 18 on the pin 9. I also provide an auxiliary receptacle 20, which may be arranged below the carrier in the lower part of the cabinet. If desired, a swinging support 21 carried on a base 22 may be provided to facilitate the removing of the receptacle 2O in emptying. A chute or funnel 23 is also preferably arranged within the cabinet for conveying the material which has been sifted through the sieve to t-he auxiliary receptacle 20.
As before noted, the receptacle 11 may be the regular ash pan of a stove, furnace orl the like, having the usual handle 24 or its equivalent, and be of any suitable shape or design and of any preferred material.
The operation of sifting the material may be brieiiy described as follows: The door 2 is opened and the sieve member 12 raised substantially as shown in Fig. 1. The receptacle 11 containing the material to be sifted is then placed on the carrier 6 and the sieve 12 then locked into the position shown in Fig. 2 or Fig. 4, by means of the thumb nuts 15. The door is then closed and the carrier and receptacle rotated by means of the crank 19 so that the small material will pass through the sieve 12, and drop down into the auxiliary receptacle 2O arranged below. The casing being entirely shut up during the sifting operation, no dust can escape so that it is not necessary to do the receptacle 1l removed. If desired, .the receptacle l1 may be drawn by the handle 24:
.upon the door 2 and the clinkers and vother waste material that was too large to pass through the sieve be picked out and thrown back, falling into the lower receptacle 20. The collected material may then be disposed of as desired, as may the ash pan or receptacle 11. When it is desired to empty the receptacle 20 the lower door 3 may be opened and the receptacle swung out and emptied, after which it may again be returned to its place.
It is of course obvious that the purpose of the casing is to prevent the escape of dust so that the same may be yomitted when4 desired and the carrier 6 be supported in any -other suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the form, larrangement and combination of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention. I-Ience I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the eX- act construction, arrangement and .combination of parts shown or described, or to the uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a cabinet, of a rotatable pan supporting member arranged in the upper part thereof and pivotally carried thereby, a pair of links pivotally connected to said pan supporting member, one of said links being located upon each side thereof, a pan mounted upon said pan supporting member, a screen cover for said pan, a pair of curved and slotted links connected to the irst mentioned links at their upper ends, means for connecting the screen cover to said links at their juncture, and binding members passing through the curved portions of the slotted links and engaging the pan supporting member, .substantially as shown and described.
