Description

' W. A. SGHLEICHBR.
BRACKET HOLDER FOR AUTOMOBILES AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 26, 1911 Patented Aug. 22, 1911.
WILLIAM A. SCHLEICHER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BRACKET-HOLDER FOR AUTOMOBILES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 26, 1911.
Patented Aug. 22, 1911.
Serial No. 629,575.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, \VILLIAM A. SoI-ILEIoHER, a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bracket-Holders for Automobiles and the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation showing the device as used; Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the bracket; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same partly broken away; and Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3, and showing the bracket used with a different form of lamp lron.
My invention has relation to bracket support-s for automobiles and the like, and is designed to provide a simple and convenient form of device, which will support both the tail lamp of the vehicle and also the license or number plate.
The supporting bracket comprises a short horizontal lamp iron engaging portion 2, a tapered lamp-engaging post 3 projecting upwardly from one end of the portion 2, and an upwardly and laterally extending sign-supporting arm 4, projecting from the opposite end of the portion 2. The portion 2 is formed with a separate clamping memher 5, which is secured by means of the clamping bolts and nuts 6, one at each end. The inner clamping face of the member 5 is formed with a central half recess 7, and with a smaller half recess 8 at each side of the central recess, and the coiiperating face of the portion 2 is provided with similar registering half recesses. The central recesses form a circular'socket for engage ment with the upwardly projecting round post 9 of the usual lamp iron 10. The de vice may, however, be used with a lamp iron such as shown at 11 in Fig. 4, having a flat post 12, which will be firmly clamped Copies of this patent may be obtained for between the opposing fiat faces separating the half recesses of the clamping portions. The laterally extending bracket arm 4 is preferably provided with transversely elongated slots 13, forming means for the attachment thereto of the sign or license plate 14.
The device may be very cheaply manufactured and forms an extremely simple and convenient device for the purpose, being capable of being readily applied to existing lamp irons and capable of supporting the lamp and license plate in such relation to each other that the lamp will illuminate the license plate. The form and arrangement of the clamp for engaging the post of the lamp iron is such as to hold the bracket very securely on the post when the nuts of the clamping bolts are tightened. This clamp-will also adapt itself to various forms and widely varying thicknesses of flat lamp posts or props.
I claim:
1. A supporting bracket of the character described, comprising a horizontal" lamp iron engaging portion having clamping means, a lamp-engaging post projecting upwardly from one end of said portion, and an upwardly and laterally extending platesupporting arm projecting from the opposite end of said portion, substantially as described.
2. A bracket of the character described, comprising a horizontal lamp iron engaging portion having clamping means, a tapered post projecting upwardly from one end of saidportion and formed integrally therewith, and an upwardly and laterally extending plate-supporting arm projectin integrally from the opposite end of sai portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM A. SCHLEICHER. Witnesses:
