Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:An α-(mercaptomethyl)acrylic acid derivative shown by the formula I [R1 is H, lower alkanoyl, (substituted)benzoyl, group shown by the formula II, etc.; R2 is H or lower alkyl].
EXAMPLE: α-(Benzoylthiomethyl)acrylic acid.
USE: A raw material for synthesizing a compound shown by the formula III useful as a hypotensive and an intermediate for synthesizing a drug.
PROCESS: A compound shown by the formula IV (X is Cl, Br, I, methanesulfonyl, or p-toluenesulfonyl) is reacted with a compound shown by the formual R1SH to give the titled compound shown by the formula I. The reaction is carried out in a solvent, e.g., methylene chloride, etc. at -50W100°C, preferably at -10W50°C. The compound shown by the formula I is subjected to catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation in the presence of a rhodium complex containing an optically active phosphine ligand, to give a compound shown by the formula V, a raw material for synthesizing a compound shown by the formula III at one try.
