Abstract
A process, for imparting to paper and cardboard consisting essentially of natural and/or regenerated cellulose fibres a high wet strength and high dimensional stability while retaining or improving its mechanical properties in the dry state, comprises impregnating the paper with a liquid composition containing formaldehyde, a halogen-containing acid, water, and a water-miscible solvent. The paper is impregnated with the composition at a temperature of 20-40 DEG C. for 5-60 minutes washed with faintly alkaline water with a pH equal to 8, and heat dried. The paper is impregnated by immersion in a liquid bath either for the whole time or just for a few seconds to get wet. The composition comprises between 1-5% formaldehyde, between 1-5% of the acid-hydrochloric, hydrobromic or perchloric- and at least 60% of the solvent preferably acetic acid, but any other anhydrous acid, ketone or alcohol may be used.
