950,859. Vacuum furnaces. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 20, 1960 [Sept. 22, 1959], No. 32316/60. Heading F4B. [Also in Division H5] An induction heated vacuum furnace comprises a vertical silica tube 1 located in upper and lower flat rings 2 and 3, these being allowed lateral play in mounting plates 17 and 16 restively. Ring seals 7, 8 and 9 are respectively provided between rings 2 and 3 and the tube 1, and between the ring 3 and a platform 6 which closes the lower end of the furnace and supports a crucible 4 and its mounting 5. The furnace is supported by the plates 16 and 17 on vertical rods 18 mounted on a steel base plate 14, this framework being constructed of non-conducting material in the region of the solenoid 13. The platform 6 is raised and lowered by a lever system 19 driven by an electric motor 20. When the platform 6 is raised, the lateral play of the furnace mounting allows uniform compression of the ring seals 7, 8 and 9 giving an effective seal on evacuation of the furnace, assisted by a ring 29 forced against the upper flat ring 2 by wing nuts 31 and springs 32 on rods 30. A tube 10 on the upper ring 2 has a vacuum conduit 21 and an inspection device 23 including a rotatable prism 24.
