Abstract

948,705. Air filters. COOPERS MECHANICAL JOINTS Ltd., J. T. RYMER, and S. P. WITCHELL. May 1, 1962, No. 16711/62. Heading B1T. Reverse flow cleaning of an inward flow tubular air filter element 11, Fig. 3, is effected by pulses of air from a cluster of nozzles 18 discharging into the upper open ends of a corresponding number of scoops 32 distributed round the inner clean side of the element and which serve to direct filtered air through apertures 30 in an upper end cap 22 of the element and from thence to a clean air manifold 1 of a filter casing. The element 11 which is of tightly woven wool and nylon sandwiched between layers of wire gauze has fifty-six pleats, the radially outermost portions of the ends thereof being embedded in radial fingers 24, Fig. 5, moulded in end caps 22, 23. Each scoop 32 is of U-shaped horizontal cross-section having its limbs extending between the pleats and abutting the limbs of adjacent scoops: Each of the eight nozzles 18 receives in turn a pulse of compressed air according to the position of a ratchet-operated valve disc (not shown) which is controlled by a piston and cylinder device as described in Specification 880,043.
