Abstract
Aluminous abrasive bodies are prepared by wet grinding pure alumina with selected sintering agents to a particle size of less than 5 microns, drying the ground slip to a moisture content of not more than 10%, sieving and compacting at a pressure of up to 5 tons p.s.i., granulating to the required grain size and sintering at 1350-1550 DEG C. for up to two hours. The surplus fines from the granulating stage may be incorporated into the ground slip either prior to, or after drying. Alternatively, the pressed compact may be pre-sintered at 500-1400 DEG C., crushed to a particle size of 0.1-1.0 mm., and incorporated into the ground slip as above. The sintering agents, which are silica, titania, magnesia, calcia, iron oxides, manganese oxides, cuprous oxide and sodium oxide, may be incorporated as such or in combination as clays, red mud or ilmenite for example up to a maximum of 20%.
