Abstract
922,794. Extruding pipe fittings. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 26, 1961 [May 12, 1960], No. 16810/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). An extruded tube has end parts 11, 15 of uniform wall thickness and an intermediate part 13 of uniform smaller wall thickness. A hollow billet 9, particularly of magnesium-base alloy heated to 320‹ C. and lubricated, is extruded from a lubricated container 1 between a die orifice 10 and mandrel 6, 7. The billet has a rear surface shaped to conform with a concave leading surface 4 of the extrusion ram 3, as described in Specification 732,603. During the initial part of the extrusion, mandrel portion 6 extends through the die whereby the tick leading end 11 of the tube is formed. As extrusion proceeds, the mandrel is advanced so that the thicker portion 7 enters the die orifice and forms the step 12 and intermediate part 13. Extrusion is then stopped, the ram and mandrel are withdrawn, a new billet 14 with shaped leading and trailing ends is placed on top of the original billet and extrusion is continued using the thicker mandrel portion 6 to form the rear end 15 of the tube. Longitudinal external fins may be formed during the extrusion by using a suitable die section. A plug may be subsequently drawn through the tube to give it a uniform bore with a stepped external shape.
