Abstract

921,192. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. July 16, 1959 [July 29, 1958; Nov. 25, 1958], Nos. 24310/58 and 37841/58. Class 103 (1). A disc brake has a pivotally-movable pressure plate carrying a friction pad assembly which is angularly adjustable relative to the pressure plate. Calliper housing 2, straddling disc 1, is formed with apertures 5 on either side of the disc, in each of which is located a pressure plate 6 having arms 7 pivoted to the housing 2. A friction pad assembly 8, comprising a rectangular pad 8a of wedge-shaped cross-section and bonded to a backing plate 8b, has lugs 9 secured to arms 7 by bolts 10 to enable the assembly 8 to be adjusted relative to the pressure plate 6 and to be easily removed. To apply the pads to the disc, the pressure plates are pivoted toward the disc by hydraulic and/or mechanical means. In Fig. 3, the applying means comprises a lever 16 pivoted by its bifurcated end at 17 to lugs 18 on one of the plates 6. A headed rod 12 extends through coaxial holes 11 in plates 6 and is secured within the bifurcated end of lever 16 by a nut 22, by which brake clearance is adjusted. The brake is applied by pivoting lever 16 about pivot 17 to draw the plates toward the disc, and is released by a spring 21 housed in a lug 19 and acting between a nut 20 on rod 12 and the plate 6. In Fig. 3, the backing plate 8c is dished. Each pad may be split into two interlocking portions. The pressure plate may be solid and the lugs on the backing plate are located one adjacent each edge of the pressure plate. Specifications 708,748 and 878,315 are referred to.
