Abstract

885,898. Surgical suturing appliances. ASTAFIEV, G. V. Sept. 2, 1959, No. 29911/59. Class 81 (2). An appliance for joining together cut sections of intestines by metal staples comprises one pair of jaws 5, 6, Fig. 2, joined by a parallel motion linkage 7, for clamping one section of intestine, and a somewhat similar pair of jaws for clamping the other section so that the two can be brought face to face by a hinge 3, Fig. 1, and locking clamp 4, with the cut ends of the intestines held against each other. The rear jaw 1, Fig. 1, of each pair carries the die assembly 22, Fig. 4, while the other 2, Fig. 1, carries the cooperating staple holder and pusher assembly 19, 19, Fig. 4. Each die and its co-operating staple holder are rotatable in opposite directions about the corresponding jaw parts by means of a handle 24, Fig. 1, which, when turned, moves them so that their operative faces are brought together, to the position shown in Fig. 4, with the opposed extreme ends of the intestine between them. A locking bar 21, Fig. 4, is then withdrawn and each staple is pressed into position individually. Each jaw has a series of movable hooks which grip the intestine prior to clamping.
