Abstract
878,219. Cathode-ray tubes. RAULAND CORPORATION. March 13, 1958 [March 13, 1957], No. 8048/58. Class 39(1). A high-transconductance gun for a cathoderay tube with a multi-apertured space-charge and control grid 16 has an auxiliary electrode 21 for converging the beam to a cross-over in the space between-the auxiliary electrode and the accelerator electrode system 24, 25. The image of the cross-over is focused on the screen electrostatically or magnetically; as shown a unipotential lens system 26, 27, 28 is used. The multi-foraminated aperture may be comprised by a mesh grid, co-planar with the surface of the control electrode or disposed on either side of it, or the aperture may be comprised by solid part of the control electrode which is pierced by a number of small apertures. The area of the emissive surface of the cathode preferably equals the area of the multi-foraminated aperture 18. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 the auxiliary electrode is a flat washer electrode 41 fixed to the front surface of the control electrode 16 and held permanently at the same potential. A suitable effective spacing between the two electrodes is achieved by reducing the thickness of one or both electrodes in the vicinity of the aperture 18. An off-set gun may be used for iontrapping.
