Abstract

Acrylonitrile, with or without other monomers, is polymerised by heating a mixture of 70 to 80 parts by weight of dimethyl formamide and 30 to 20 parts by weight of monomer, together with 0,03 to 0,15 parts by weight of a persulphate soluble in this mixture, for 25 to 50 hours at 3t DEG to 60 DEG C., without previous complete exclusion of atmospheric oxygen being necessary, so that a polymer solution is formed from which, without further after-treatment, shaped structures, particularly fibres, can be produced by known methods. Other monomers which may be used include methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, acrylamide, styrene and vinyl pyridine, and the persulphate may be ammonium or potassium persulphate.
