Abstract

841,818. Filters. FRAM CORPORATION. Feb. 3, 1959 [July 9, 1958], No. 3796/59. Class 46. A filter unit comprises a liquid tight shell formed from two moulded cup members 10, 11, a tube 12 projects from and is integral with the bottom of each cup and a filter cartridge 17 is arranged with one end of the cartridge in sealing relation with the bottom of the cup 11 so that liquid flows from within the cartridge to the tube 12 extending from the cup 11. The cups are preferably made from nylon and cemented together or secured by a spin seal. In the embodiment shown the filter cartridge is formed of pleated paper having end caps 18, 19, the latter is formed with a central aperture and preferably made of paper whereby a spring 21 urges the cartridge towards the cup 11 and a seal is made between the cap 19 and a circular rib 20 on the cup. In a modification the spring is replaced by plastic fingers extending from the bottom of cup 10. In a further modification, the end cap 19 is omitted and the element bonded directly to the cup 11. The filter is described as being particular useful in the filtering of fuel supplied to the carburettor of motor vehicles.
