Abstract

827,622. Furnaces. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Nov. 15, 1956 [Nov. 16, 1955], No. 34913/56. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). Flue gases containing reducible metal oxide particles-e.g. iron or manganese-which are produced in metallurgical operations, are cleaned by subjection . to a hot bed of coke 22, Fig. 2, kept at a temperature which reduces the particles completely to metal and maintains the latter in the molten form. The necessary steam and air or oxygen enriched air for the coke is mixed with the laden flue gas and admitted to the coke bed through a conduit 20, the resulting gases being drawn through the bed and removed via a pipe 24 by a fan 26. The bed temperature is controlled by the ratio of the amount of steam with respect to the amount of oxygen bearing gas that is introduced thereto and the steam &c. inlet may be separate from that of the flue gas. The coke may be gas or electrically heated.
