Abstract

823,524. Beet-topping machines. G. B. W. FARM MACHINERY Ltd. Nov. 12, 1957 [Nov. 12, 1956], No. 34522/56. Class 6(3). A beet-topping mechanism comprises a frame 11 having a forwardly-extending arm 9 pivoted rearwardly to the frame and carrying a feelerwheel 6 at its free end, the frame also having pivoted to it a rearwardly-extending arm 20 carrying a knife 19 at its free end, the knife being rearward of, and below, the feeler-wheel and the arms being mechanically interconnected by a link 26, 27 and being arranged so that there is a reduction-ratio between the vertical movements of feeler-wheel and knife. The link comprises two inter-telescoping parts 26, 27 held together by a tension-spring 29. The mechanism may be mounted on the beetharvester described in Specification 823,523 which constitutes the frame 11. The feeler wheel 6 is driven by a chain, Fig. 2 (not shown) from a shaft on the machine connected to the towing tractor. Behind the topping mechanism, on the harvester, is a rotary flail, Fig. 4 (not shown) for sweeping aside cut-tops.
