Abstract
789,342. Engine assembly; casings; cooling cylinders; valve-gear. GEORGES R. Jan. 11, 1956 [Jan. 22, 1955]. No. 1029/56. Classes 7(2), 7(4) and 7(6) [Also in Group XXIV] To form a complete engine for vehicles, units M1, M2, &c., each dynamically balanced by having two diametrically opposed and preferably horizontal cylinders the pistons of which are connected to unit crank-shafts 1 by connecting rods 12a, 12b, are assembled with the crankshafts 1 aligned and coupled at required mutual settings, various mechanisms and accessories common to all the units M1, M2, &c. being grouped in an independent casing 2; as shown, a crankshaft extension 3 drives a governor 6, a.tachometer 7 an oil pump 8 a shaft 9 powering individual unit ignition distributers 17 and drive pulleys 16 of cooling fans 10, and camshafts 4 having individual unit sections 14. The crankshafts 1 are coupled by teeth 18 brought into engagement by a differential nut 19. Through clamping rods 22 are provided. Theoretically suitable arrangements of crank throws for two-unit, three-unit and four-unit engines to give respective successive angular crankshaft displacements of 180 degrees, 120 degrees and 90 degrees are described; due to the dynamic balance of the individual units, the actual crankshaft settings may be allowed to differ from these by 5 degrees to 10 degrees'to obviate resonant vibration.
