Abstract
773,216. Hypodermic syringes. POTTER PHARMACEUTICAL CORPORATION. Aug. 16, 1954 [Sept. 2, 1953], No. 23791/54. Class 81(2) A hypodermic syringe comprises a medicament container having a puncturable seal, a hypodermic needle normally withdrawn within the container with its point directed towards the puncturable seal, a passage through the needle being at a point remote from the needle point in communication with the interior of the container, pressure-operated piston means for driving the needle through the puncturable seal, means for effecting such pressure and means for actuating the pressure effecting means. A tube 10 contains an ampoule 11 sealed at the rear end by a resilient member 22 and at the forward end by a piercable rubber &c. stopper 20, which closes a passage 19 in the ampoule 11. The ampoule contains a needle 17 which is provided at the rear end with a passage 15 communicating with the ampoule and which is fitted to a needle piston 18. A piston 23 having a shaft 24 is urged by a spring 26 against the rear closure 22 of the ampoule. The rear end of the spring 26 bears against an apertured collar which is fitted into the rear end 10a of the tube 10 and which is integral with a housing 29 for the spring 26. The rear end of the piston shaft 24 is provided with releasable conical detent means 25 which normally engages the collar to hold the shaft 24 in retracted position, the spring 26 being compressed. The rear end of the shaft 24 is trifurcated and provided with a bore in which engages a headed pin 33. The tube 10 is telescopically arranged within a sleeve 32 which is open at the forward end and which is bored at the rear end for the passage of the pin 33. The bore in the sleeve 32 is provided with a frusto-conical surface 30 over part of its length for the reception of the conical detent means 25. In use, the pin 33 is withdrawn from the device and the forward end 10b of the tube 10 is pressed against the patient's body so that the detent means 25 is pressed further into the bore of the sleeve 32. The trifurcated portions of the shaft 24 are thus pressed together to release the shaft 24 from engagement with the collar at the rear end 10a of the tube 10. The spring 26 then drives the piston 23 into the ampoule 11 with the resultant projection of the needle 17 into the patient's body through the passage 19 in the ampoule 11, the ampoule stopper 20 and the forward end 10b of the tube 10, and the ejection of the medicament through the needle 17. In a modification, the sealing member at the rear end of the ampoule is provided with a concave inner surface. In another arrangement, the passage 15 at the rear end of the needle is omitted and the needle piston is provided with radial grooves on its rear face communicating with longitudinal grooves in its peripheral face, so that medicament can pass from the ampoule into the needle.
