Predetermined lengths of slide fastener chain having an element-free portion at one or both ends are produced from a roll of continuous fastener chain by intermittently feeding the continuous fastener chain past element-removing means and cutting-off means, spaced therefrom, operated simultaneously while the chain is at rest. Continuous fastener chain C is drawn from a roll 28 by rollers 23, 25, 27 intermittently chain by intermittently feeding the continuous fastener chain past element-removing means and cutting-off means, spaced therefrom, operated simultaneously while the chain is at rest. Interconnected fastener elements 12, 13 are removed over a short length a1 of the chain C while the chain is at rest by a punch 35 positioned before the roller 23 and reciprocated by an eccentric 36 driven from the main drive shaft 43. The punch 35 cuts through the coupling heads of the elements 12, 13, which drop into a receptacle 39, any remnants of the elements on the tape beads being removed therefrom by air nozzles or brushes 81, 82. Simultaneously with the operation of the punch 35, a blade 40, spaced from the punch between the rollers 25 and 27 and driven from the shaft 43, severs the fastener chain at x to provide a length thereof with an element-free extension a at one end. By severing the chain mid-way of the element-free length, fastener lengths with element-free extensions at both ends may be formed. To form a length of fastener chain with an elementfree extension a<SP>x</SP>, Fig. 7, at one end and an element-free gap g near the other end, a suitablyshaped punch D is used to remove the requisite elements. To vary the predetermined length of fastener chain produced, the rotation of the feed rollers may be varied and a tension roller 75 between the rollers 23, 25 suitably adjusted.
