Abstract

762,801. Welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. May 24, 1954 [June 16, 1953], No. 15299/54. Class 83 (4). A method of arc welding carbon steel comprises fusing a low-carbon steel electrode and/or filler rod in an electric arc shielded with a gas mixture composed of 0.5 to 10 per cent oxygen and an inert monatomic gas consisting principally of argon, and in which at least three strong deoxidizing agents are added to the welding zone. The oxidizing agents are preferably alloyed with the electrode and/or filler rod and are selected from the following elements: manganese, silicon, aluminium, zirconium, titanium, calcium, manganese, vanadium and chromium. The compositions of three electrodes are given in the Specification. The electrode may be non-consumable, in which case the filler rod contains the deoxidizing agents. Alternatively the deoxidizing agent may be alloyed with the electrode, or some may be alloyed with the electrode and the remainder with the filler rod. The shielding gas may comprise 2 per cent commercially pure oxygen and the balance commercially pure argon. Some helium may be added to the gas mixture. An example is given of the sizes of electrode and the filler rod used, the welding speed, the arc current, the filler rod feed speed, and the rate of flow of the shielding gas for the welding of carbon steel artillery shells. Specification 762,848, [Group II], is referred to.
