Abstract

A composition for preserving, protecting and polishing surfaces of metal, paint or leather comprises a waxy composition, a methyl- or methylphenylpolysiloxane oil and/or resin and an organic ester of titanic acid. The waxy compositions are solid, paste or liquid in nature, depending upon whether they contain solvents or diluents in which are dissolved, dispersed or emulsified one or more waxes such as beeswax, carnauba wax, candellilla wax, montan wax, Japan wax, paraffin wax, ozokerite, crystalline or microcrystalline waxes (oxidized or unoxidized) and contain e.g. from 0.5 to 100 per cent of the wax or waxes with or without stabilizers, colouring agents or pigments. The polysiloxane oils have an R/Si ratio of 1.9 : 1 to 2.1 : 1 and the resins have an R/Si ratio of 1.3 : 1 to 1.7 : 1. The latter are generally used in solution in organic solvents. Titanium esters specified are butyl-, diethanolamine- and triethanolaminetitanates and partially polymerized butyl titanate. The preferred compositions contain 1 to 40 per cent of siloxane oil plus resin and 0.5 to 20 per cent of titanium ester by weight of the solids content of the composition. In examples: (1) a furniture polish consists of paraffin, non-oxidized microcrystalline wax, while spirit, oil of turpentine, methylpolysiloxane oil and butyl titanate; (2) a polish consists of carnauba wax, beeswax, oil of turpentine and either a methylpolysiloxane oil and butyl titanate or a toluene solution of a methylpolysiloxane resin and triethanolamine titanate; (3) a car polish consists of an aerosol composed of oxidized microcrystalline wax, trichlorethylene, a solvent boiling between 95 DEG and 115 DEG C., a methylpolysiloxane oil and resin and butyl titanate, or if triethanolamine titanate is used some of the solvent is replaced by ethanol; (4) a wax composition consists of a cream, obtained by dissolving in hot water a mixture of microcrystalline wax, colophony, montan wax and paraffin wax, which has been saponified with a boiling solution of castile soap, potassium carbonate and water, in admixture with an emulsion of a methylpolysiloxane oil and triethanolamine titanate, and optionally water-soluble colouring agents, e.g. Havana brown and nigrosine, and an antistatic material, e.g. an ionic wetting agent with a non-ionic wetting agent; (5) a preservative cream for oil paintings consists of microcrystalline wax, colophony, montan wax, paraffin wax, methylpolysiloxane oil, a toluene solution of a methylpolysiloxane resin, triethanolamine titanate and ammonium oxalate; (6) a car polish consists of carnauba wax, white spirit, oil of turpentine, a methylpolysiloxane oil and butyl titanate, or if triethanolamine titanate is used some of the white spirit is replaced by butyl alcohol; (7) a polish for ski runners consists of carnauba wax, colophony, pine tar, a methylpolysiloxane oil and butyl titanate; (8) a coating composition for typewriter ribbons and carbon papers consists of methyl violet, victoria blue, oleic acid, lamp black, Milori blue, non-oxidized crystalline synthetic wax, wool grease, petroleum jelly, mineral oil, methylpolysiloxane oil and resin (in toluene) and butyl or triethanolamine titanate.
