Abstract
Copolymers are made by polymerizing acrylonitrile with a smaller quantity of N-allyl morpholine and/or N-beta-methallyl morpholine, preferably in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, such as a mixture of triethanolamine and potassium or ammonium persulphate, the morpholines acting also as polymerization accelerators and controlling the pH value. Also present in the monomer mixture to the extent of 2.5-7.5 per cent may be alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid in which the alkyl groups contain 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Polymerization may be carried out by bulk, emulsion or pearl methods, or in aqueous solution, preferably at a pH of 7.5 to 9. Polymerization in aqueous medium may be carried out by the gradual addition of the monomers as polymerization proceeds. The copolymers produced may be formed into filaments, foils, tapes, ribbons, sheets, tubes and rods which are dyeable with acid wool dyestuffs.
