Abstract

749,010. Metal-working presses. HOLT & MOSEDALE, Ltd., HOLLAND, T. S., and HOLLAND, A. S. May 12, 1954 [May 12, 1953], No. 13172/53. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] A device for applying lubricant to the dies 24 of a press comprises one or more lubricant discharge nozzles 23 operatively connected to a body portion 10 mounted on a stationary part 18 of the press and movable from an inoperative position in which they are clear of the dies to an operative position in which they are disposed between the dies, means being provided for controlling the movement of the nozzles and the discharge of lubricant therefrom. The lubricant is preferably graphite and is discharged from the nozzles as a fine spray by compressed air. A pair of nozzles 23 are mounted on a valve chamber 65 carried by a lazy-tongs linkage 21 mounted on spindles 27 rotatable in the body portion 10. The spindles carry intermeshing gears 28, Fig. 5, one of which is driven by a gear 32 in mesh with a rack 33 of a compressed air motor 34. To operate the device a manually operated valve 38 is opened to allow compressed air to pass through an interlock valve 41 to a main control valve 43 where it moves to the left a piston 44 thereby connecting a main air supply pipe 45 with a port 46 and pipe 40 leading to an oil reservoir 47. The air thus forces the oil through a restrictor 48 to the motor piston 49 moving it to the right and thereby extending the lazy tongs linkage to position the nozzles between the dies. A valve 64 mounted on the linkage is then opened by engagement with a fixed abutment 66 to allow compressed air from a supply line 63, reducing valve 62 and pipes 61, 72 to pass to the valve chamber 65 where it opens a spring-loaded check valve and is admixed with graphite discharged by air pressure from a container 67, the graphite extrained air being then sprayed through the nozzles. The control valve 43 incorporates a timing piston 53 connected through port 52 with the port 46. The other side of this piston is connected through pipe 58 and restrictor 59 with an oil reservoir 60 supplied with compressed air at reduced pressure from the reducing valve 62. Thus the timing valve moves slowly to the right during and after the movement of the motor piston and the speed of movement may be adjusted by regulating the reducing valve 62. As the timing valve reaches its right-hand position it opens a duct 55, thereby allowing the compressed air to act differentially on the valve piston 44 moving it to the right. Compressed air thus passes through pipe 50 to the right-hand side of the motor piston 49 and the pipe 40 and port 52 are connected to atmosphere through port 57. The motor thus reverses to retract the nozzles. The interlock valve 41 is opened by the ram 25 of the press and thus ensures that the lubricating device cannot be operated until the ram is in its upper position. A further interlock valve 68 operatively connected to the clutch of the press ensures that the press cannot be started until the nozzles have been withdrawn.
