Abstract

A plastic polymer of trifluorochloroethylene is dispersed in a non-aqueous liquid medium comprising as a dispersant at least one compound selected from aliphatic and aromatic esters, ether alcohols, and ketones, having at least three carbon atoms per molecule and having a surface tension of at least 23 dynes per sq. cm. at 20 DEG C., and a diluent selected from aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic alcohols having at least two carbon atoms per molecule, unsubstituted ethers and hydrocarbon fractions boiling above 150 DEG C. and preferably containing a relatively large amount of aromatic constituents. The polymer may contain up to 15 per cent of vinyl chloride, tetrafluoroethylene, perfluoropropene or acrylonitrile. The dispersant may be methyl isobutyl, methyl ethyl or di-isobutyl ketone, isophorone, cyclohexanone, methoxy, ethoxy or butoxy ethanol, ethoxy ethoxy ethanol, methyl, ethyl or butyl acetate, ethyl propionate, amyl acetate or ethyl benzoate. The diluent may be xylene, toluene, benzene or dibutyl ether. A plasticizer such as a liquid or waxy polymer of trifluorochloroethylene, dioctyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate may be incorporated in the dispersion. The dispersion may also contain fillers such as calcium silicate, calcium carbonate, carbon black and titanium dioxide, and pigments such as the phthalocyanines and chrome green. The dispersion may be used for coating surfaces.
