Abstract
In the production of sulphuric acid by the two-stage oxidation of hydrogen sulphide, successively to sulphur dioxide and trioxide, oxygen in the form of moisture-containing air or other oxygen-containing gas is added separately in the two stages in such quantities that the desired reactions are effected without the application of external heat, other than by preheating the air or other oxygen-containing gas if desired. Gases containing less than 12 per cent of hydrogen sulphide may be employed. The nitrose or contact process may be used in the second stage. In a multilayer contact process the oxygen required may be added entirely or partially after the first or second contact layer.
