716,568. Harvesting root-crops. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Jan. 28, 1953 [Jan. 28, 1952], No. 2242/52. Class 6 (3) A root-crop harvesting machine comprises a concave disc-share 5 delivering excavated material to a flat rotary spider 9 on a shaft inclined to the vertical so that the lowest edges of the disc and spider are adjacent, the spider being driven so that its arms move rearwardly at the lowest point to carry the crop around until deflected on to an elevator 15. The spider, share and elevator are mounted behind a tractor 2 and the elevator delivers to a sorting conveyer 22 on a trailer 19 towed alongside by a second tractor 20. The first tractor 2 tows a frame 1 supported on depth wheels 4 and attached by links 3 to the tractor. The frame carries the disc 5 rotated by contact with the ground and the spider 9 driven from the tractor and driving the endless elevator 15 through jointed shafting 16. A guard 12 surrounds the spider and a deflector 13 impels the crop transversely on to the elevator, allowing haulm and trash to pass therebeneath. Haulms are subsequently removed by a fixed scraper 14. The crop is discharged into a hopper 21 and is sorted by operators seated, at 23, adjacent to the conveyer 22.
