Abstract

678,847. Batteries. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 25, 1951 [May 4, 1950], No. 11081/50. Class 53. A dry battery comprises a stack of cells joined in series in a container 1, each cell consisting of electrodes 6a, 6b in the form of discs and separated by an insulating disc 3 provided with openings 4 which are filled with a mixture of depolarizer and electrolyte. A muslin disc 5 may be cemented to the lower side of the disc 3 to retain the depolarizing mixture in position in the openings 4. Adjacent cells are connected in series by the bipolar formation of the electrodes, one surface 6a of which is, for example, of zinc, the other surface 6b consisting of carbon. The discs 3 are of polyvinyl chloride or other resilient plastic material or elastomer and are provided with central holes to receive a supporting rod or tube 2. The complete stack is compressed to force the discs 3 into close contact with the electrodes, the rod 2 and container 1, and to cause the peripheries of adjacent discs to engage one another and form tight seals between adjacent cells as shown in Fig. 2 of the Provisional Specification. Fig. 2 of the Complete Specification shows a complete battery in which after the discs have been compressed into the container 1 they are maintained under compression by turning over the lower end 1d of the container. The top of the battery is closed by an insulating disc 1b and a block 9. The tube 2 is provided with side openings to enable tappings and connections 8c to be brought out at the top of the battery.
