675,924. Tubular heat - exchangers. ESCHER WYSS, Ltd. Oct. 3, 1950 [Oct. 27, 1949], No. 24137/50. Class 64(iii) In a heat exchanger comprising a bundle of finned tubes 14 extending between tube plates 2, 3 with headers secured thereto for the passage of a heat exchange medium through the tubes and wherein a second heat exchange medium under high pressure flows over the tubes, plain tubes 15 are provided at least some of which replace finned tubes within the tube bundle, the plain tubes 15 being made oi material having a relatively high tensile strength as compared with the finned tubes which consist of material of high thermal conductivity. Additional finned tubes 14 may be provided outside the tube bundle to compensate for the reduction in efficiency caused by replacing some of the finned tubes by plain tubes within the bundle. Additional plain tubes 15 also may be provided around the tube bundle and this it is stated results in a more balanced stress distribution in the tube plates. One end of each finned tube 15 is enlarged in diameter to permit these tubes to be withdrawn for cleaning purposes.
